Requirement 6 for Personal Fitness states the candidate must either run/walk as far as possible in 9 minutes or measure the time for a 1 mile run/walk. All the running tracks in our area are metric, so 4 laps = 1600 meters, just a bit short of a mile. Do other counselors use an exact measured mile for this requirement or do they accept 1600 meters?

This is good reason to meet with the MBC before starting a merit badge. If it were me, I would measure the distance traveled in 9 Min in meters, which meet the requirement of the merit badge. Or if your heart is set on running a mile, run 4 laps + nine meters. (A boy scout should be able to pace off 9 meters

In my opinion it fits the spirit of the requirement, but the final determination would rest with the MBC.

If you had the choice between flying a plane that was inspected in accordance with the safety inspection checklist, or one that was inspected in the spirit of the safety inspection checklist, which would you choose? Every day we depend on others doing this right rather than what was convenient. When you pace off the extra distance, what are you teaching your Scouts?

Run the extra yard! Don't run the extra yard! What does the MB counselor want?
