Depending on the instrument you play, Music and possibly Bugling can be partly done with concert band.

There are a number of wildlife badges which might be helped by the outdoor management class.

You really just need to take a look at the badge names and then the requirements for those you are interested in.

if you look at www.meritbadge.com you can see all the meritbadges. you know the best what topics you cover in you classes. check out all the mbs on the site and see which ones apply. as stated, music/bugling and outdoor subject badges are obvious possibilities. but, that site will allow you to explore all of your options.

There are a number of MBs that might be partially covered in your classes. I don't know what is covered, so you will have to look at them. Maybe even take a copy of the requirements to the teacher and ask if they can cover them.

Lifetime Health - Public Health, First Aid, Medicine, Safety, Emergency Preparedness, Disabilities Awareness, Dentistry

English - Reading, Communications, Journalism, Public Speaking

Concert Band - Music, Bugling

Outdoor Management - Soil and Water Conservation, Fish and Wildlife Management, Nature, Environmental Science, Insect Study, Mammal Study, Reptile and Amphibian Study, Bird Study, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Oceanography, Forestry

geo/metro/astronomy ??? - Geology, Astronomy, Space Exploration

Math -

American History - American Heritage, American Cultures, Citizenship in the Nation

And don't forget - Scholarship

do not be afraid to print the requirements and show them to a teacher. You might even be surprised to find a teacher is aMB counselor and would most likely complete the MB by letting you show any requirements not covered in school.

save your projects such as web development in computer class this helps with communications.

I have one scout who gave the teachers the print outs and it seems they use it to teach the class practically. If there was a meritbadge for all his classes he would have them by now.

Keep up the good work glad you made the connection

Our troop's 7th graders are currently doing a huge project in their Language Arts class. They're writing an autobiography (8 chapters, plus pictures, timelines, and other stuff). This will satisfy (by a factor of 10) the "write an autobiography" requirement for Communications MB.

Become familiar with the requirements for various MBs, especially the required ones. That way when you have the option of, say, picking a topic for a Citizenship class, you can accomplish a merit badge requirement at the same time. :)

Also look at Reading and Scholarship MBs.

I'm sure there are other MB requirements that can be accomplished in the normal course of school work. You just need to be aware of the requirements and, technically, start working on the MB before you start on the school work/project.

As an educator, I have always used some of the MB requirements as a basis for my use of 'experience based instruction' for my students. The knowledge gained by doing on the part of the students is far stronger than what a teacher can impart (we know that one always remembers something that was done far more than what was simply received through lecture.

The development of the MB program by BP was based upon allowing the scouts to experience and learn and then recognize them for what they have learned.

The use of the MB program by BSA as the backbone of its upper rank requirments is what gives the program its strength. There are some required skills and then some selective skills. But the result is a far more confident, skilled individual -- thus the mystique of the Eagle Scout!

One merit badge that many high school kids forget is Traffic Safety.
If you are taking Drivers Ed in school you will complete the badge.

Also Theater.
