Archery - Bow String Jigs

Postby jmjamro » Mon Aug 30, 2004 1:49 pm

With the changes to Archery MB, I have a lot of boys with partials. One of the areas is the making of the bow strings (not enough jigs at camp this year ... :( ). Is anyone aware of an online source for plans to make a bow string jig? Or a place to purchase the jigs?

Tanx ...

I think that two nails and a 2x4 would work as a jig it might not be pretty but many years ago i do believe thats what I used. you just have to have regular string to get the spacings right .

Bowstring jigs are available from most archery shops (Most will order you one if they don't keep them in stock). They are rather expensive. The current printing (2004) of the Archery Merit Badge pamphlet has instructions for building a jig that shouldn't cost more than a little time and $10 or less if you have some basic woodworking skills, a drill, and a jigsaw. It only requires an 8 foot 2"x4", a 3/8" dowel, 2 carriage bolts with flat washers and wing nuts, and some wood screws to build it, and it will work as well as a commercially made jig. Bowstrings can also be made with a board and 2 nails, but using a jig will make it much easier to apply the serving to the end loops on the bowstring. Here is a link to another bowstring jig and string making instructions:

Hope this helps,

Look at BuildItYourselfGear on the net.
They have a good jib design and lots of other stuff also.
