We're using a great resource for the bugling badge --
www.scoutbugle.comNo, we don't have anything to do with them nor did we buy the bugle there, but they have step by steps for the boys.

That looks like a helpful Site. Several times I've learned that Units were seeking assistance in this area, and I'll pass it along.
I'm sure someone will toot their horn and help me here, haha, but....I have to ask this. Were Music and Bugling always separate, or once combined?

Great site. AS a Counselor and a Music Educator I will definitely have my scouts and Students use it.

My daughter is also a Music educator person, and I recruited her for the Music MB Counselor. I sat in on her first encounter with our Scouts, as the two-deep person, and was I impressed
Now, if I can get her on the Committee too, haha.

I bought 2 bugles for 2 sons. Talk about a tough MB. However, I think a very rewarding MB.

I can play bugle calls on the trumpet (Play the trumpet in a high school band) but I never actually was troop bugler. So I decided to become a councilor for the badge.

Great! My youngest is almost 11 and when troop positions were selected he did not have a position. One must understand we have a troop of 10 boys but he was still disapointed that he did not have a leadership position and he is a leader not a follower dispite his age. At the next meeting he inquired about the bugler. He is in the 5th grade middle school band and plays the trumpet. But he wants to be a bugler. He wants to honor veterans at their funerals when he becomes proficient enough. He is our troop bugler and is proud of it. He will need a MB councelor at some time but the requirements are many.

You tell your son I'M proud of HIM! And he has my gratitude and my respect.... NOW... for two reasons: 1) Even though he's only 10, I respect him as a man TODAY because he's thinking and behaving like one; and 2) because when I'm dead, I won't be in a position to thank him, then. (Mick, I'm certain that in saying this, I'm speaking for a lot more Vets than just myself. Your son will rarely hear a Vet speak up and put him (or her) self in the position of being thanked... it makes the vast majority of us feel very uncomfortable. But, I've learned to force myself to speak up. Your son's desire is an honorable one... and I assure you, even though he may play Taps at a hundred funerals without every receiving a personal thanks, nobody will EVER forget it.)

That's wonderful! I believe music is such a great thing. It's amazing the stories it can tell and what it means for people.
Your son seems to have very noble goals in mind "He wants to honor veterans at their funerals when he becomes proficient enough." You should be proud

RW Smith,
I am and I am certain my son will be humbled by your response. I will share it with him. He has a neighbor that is a WWII vet and like you is vey proud of him. He also has 2 grandfathers, still living, that are WWII vets and he has a father that is a vetern that are very proud of him. I served six years in the USN on submarines and am very proud of having served. My boys recognize this. In WV a our local delegate has proprosed legislation to encouage bugling in the schools so that veterns may have Taps played at their funneral without being counted absent from school. This delegate, that my son has paged for in the House of Delegates in WV, is an Eagle Scout. He also understands the call to the Scout Laws and the Duty to God and Country.

Mick after reading your post about your son makes me realize that just because a child is only 11 years old they sometimes will make you eat your words. I would like to also add my congratulations to you son and his troop for having enough sense to let a child do something he wants to do instead of making him do something he dont want to. also when you talk to or send your local delegate a letter tell him that there a people who are very proud of someone who will take up the cause of scouting. I would be very proud and I hope that you delegate will call the Governor and maybe you son could get something of an honor from him. In our GREAT Commenwealth of KENTUCKY our governor gives out a very special honor and its very well recieved to all who get it.

As a trumpet player and daughter of a band director whose primary instrument was trumpet (who also earned the bugler merit badge when he was in scouts) and who taught private lessons in the house for more years that I can count, I was taught these using the 1st valve. If I am correct, they can be played with any valve combination depending on what range the boy is most comfortable in. Unless, of course, you are doing taps as an echo where you would want both people to be using the samve valve combination

Hi everyone, I'm new here.
I am a music and bugling councelor for our troop, and I thought I would put out there what I know about Bugling.
A Scout can play these calls on a standard Bugle, Trumpet, or Cornet.
When using a valved instrument, any combination of valves is acceptible. Peresonally, I play a trumpet with the 3rd valve down. This puts a Bb trumpet in the key of G, a traditional key for "Taps" to be played on.
As a councelor, I only require "Taps", "To the Color", and "Retreat" to be memorized, all other calls can be read from music.
I also direct the scouts to the Bugles Across America web site. BAA is an organization that provides Taps Buglers for veterans funerals. Many scouts across the country have joined BAA, and it is a great service project.
Well, that was long-winded wasn't it? I have been playing the trumpet for 25 years (sometimes proffesionally!) , and I believe music education is very important for all children.

My son plays trombone in the 6th grade band. He inquired about bugler, does his trombone work help him in this area? I don't have a music background, and was wondering if this would help him out. He loves his trombone, how hard is it to pickup the bugle with that background?

I too played the trombone as a youth.
Picked up bugle a few times.
It was not that hard since all the notes are "lip controlled".
The only issue would be the dramatically smaller mouthpiece.

My son also plays the trombone and is in the 7th grade. We just purchased a bugle for him to start working on the bugle several weeks ago. He can play taps and revelle on the trombone. As Billiken stated his biggest problem now on the bugle is lip control with the smaller mouth piece. It will just take time to master the bugle.
