Computer's merit badge, spreadsheet requirement

Postby phcooper » Mon May 05, 2008 8:33 pm

My son is working on his computer merit badge, one of the requirements is to make a spreadsheet program to develop a food budget for an outing for the patrol. He and I have done a search online for ideas, and found only one that another scout had done that was basically a daily menu. Has anyone else made anything like that and if so would you mind sharing your ideas so we can spark something for my son. I think what we need really is a good start on brainstorming for ideas on what to include or how detailed he should go. He wants to go deeper than a daily menu. Thanks for any input....

Not to go into too much detail, but I would suggest that he not try to make this harder than it needs to be. Look at the strengths of a spreadsheet and use them.

Why not base the Computer Food Budget Spreadsheet on the spreadsheets (tables) included for food budgeting in the Camping Merit Badge Workbook:

or...
Cooking Merit Badge Workbook:

Our troop used to have a much-photocopied table for patrol menu planning. The columns were something like Item, quantity, estimated cost, extended (qty times cost), actual (and maybe difference). The grubmaster listed each item he'd need to prepare the menu, and guessed at it's actual cost. It was a great learning tool.

Thanks for the input!!! I know this will help him out some. He hasn't thought about those other sources. I looked at them a few minutes ago, and looks like that should be enough idea to get him rolling. Any other ideas would be welcome, and hopefully when he gets it done he'll have something to share with other scouts. Thanks!!!

...we now have a number of great external links?

One of the links is for free online lessons in how to set up a spreadhsett in Excel:
