Jerry what is the status of WNS at Laurel Caverns? Are you guys doing the caving/climbing stuff for scouts? I am in Ohio and we have no WNS in our area....yet.

Hello, my two cents on the issue. It is understandable that some of you might have concerns regarding safety issues when it comes to climbing since it can lead to accidents and even death. Now as a Merit Badge Counselor you have the authority to decide who you give your class to and if you feel a certain scout should not take the class for maturity reasons then the scout and its leader need to either come back at another time when they feel the scout has gained enough maturity for this type of activity or find another MB Counselor. Now on the other hand I cringe every time a Merit Badge Counselor decides to add requirements to a Merit Badge. BSA has done a great job at discussing, taking in input, weight in issues to approve these requirements. I don't believe that we should add any requirement to any merit badge what so ever. Maturity doesn't always come with age and we certainly should not discriminate because of this.

So my suggestion is that you use the case by case method where you look at your scouts and decide who is mature enough to safely complete all MB requirements. The little one can be a safer climber than the bigger one. We need to stop age and size discrimination in BSA.

My Two Cents...
