I've concidered signing up to be an archery Merit badge councelor for our troop. I know that I am not supposed to move from the standard but I've been asked about mechanical releases...
The first shooting requirement option for both the recurve and the compound options (e-1 and f-1) specifically state that they must use a finger release (I assume a tab or a glove), where e-2/f-2 do not. If I MUST go according to the written requirement, I MUST ALLOW a mechanical release for F-2. Right?
But I don't think this was the intent of the requirement.
The requirement in question:
Do ONE of the following:
F-1
"Using a compound bow and arrows with a finger release, shoot a single round ..."
OR
F-2
"Shooting 30 arrows in five-arrow ends at an 80-centimeter (32-inch) five-color target at 10 yards and using the 10 scoring regions, make a score of 170."

I woul suggest fingers only for a new archer. In the MB book I have it states if a release is used it must be under the direct supervision of a qualified MB cunselor
