Nuclear Science Worksheets

OK - I printed out the Nuclear Science requirements. Does anyone have an idea of when the Atomic Energy worksheets will be replaced with the Nuclear Science worksheets? Thanks. Van B

Question on this badge change. Kevin earned Atomic Energy. He was told at MBC that he could not also earn Nuclear Science.
Any comments. The requirements are different and the badge is also different. He found AE very interesting.

It's my understanding that Nuclear Science has retained the same merit badge number in the BSA database that Atomic Energy had (#24). In the past, the BSA has always changed the number when the new merit badge could be earned in addition to earning the old merit badge. They leave it the same when it cannot be earned again.

He will be disappointed. He was reading the NS badge requirements and was hoping he could get both.

That's true. The MB ID number did not change, so a Scout can not earn Nuclear Science if he already has Atomic Energy.

As an Atomic Energy / Nuclear Science MB councelor I believe that the requirements have changed with the times and usually for the better. I believe that we should encourage boys that have achieved any merit badge that BSA has changed,to review the new MB requirements. The requirements were changed for a reason and they should understand the differences. In this case the badge and name have changed but the requirements have been strengthened. In my opinion they have not changed significantly to receive a new badge. Also, since BSA did not change the MB number it is an update to reflect the times not a significant change. If a boy is interested in a particular area he will not mind investigating the changes and not receiving a new badge.
