I've found that the best way to handle merit badges in the
Professions category is to find a counselor who is actually in
that profession. While related professions will suffice,
actual doctors, dentists, and lawyers, etc, can give insites
that others will miss.

Unfortunately, being professionals, they often have very busy
schedules and it's hard to make room for things like teaching
merit badges. Be courteous, be prompt, and be prepared for all
your meetings with them.

My eleven year old scouts, recently completed the Medicine MB,
on of the things the did, was to help out at the local Blood
drive that was held at our church. They helped man the snack
table for the volunteers who gave blood. Made sure that the
crackers and juice were stocked. It was a very good activity
for them, a great success.

Props to my 11 year old scout leaders, they are great!

Since engineering covers an extremely wide range of
professions, it would be wise to talk to more than one person.
My father, for example, is a biomedical engineer; his job
would be almost completely different from another engineer's.

What does a biotechnical engineer do? I don't think I've heard
of them.

I just got my Medicine merit badge a couple of days ago, and
to be quite honest it was one of the most difficult merit
badges I have ever completed. Since I am planning to go to
medical school sometime in the near future, I would reccomend
you doing this merit badge only if you are seriously
interested in the medical field. But hey, if you want to do
this one for fun, by all means pursue it.

As for the Engineering merit badge, I am almost completed with
that one. I would say most of these Professions merit badges
are created by zealots because they are somewhat difficult to
the untrained Scout.

Good Luck!

If you have any trouble finding the right people to teach
merit badges than your troop needs to use the troop recourse
survey on this website. Yes by all means as we teach in
roundtable and other training opps. USE YOUR RESOURCES and
most of the time all you have to do is ask any professionals
and most of them will work with you and teach but most people
will not volunteer but will do anything if asked. So in trying
to help train just ask and the worst thing is that they can
say no but last time i looked there are more professionals at
anything that are just waiting to be asked

Our Troop recently sponsored a Merit Badge Counselor training
session and Youth Protection Training. We invited the parents
of all the scouts... almost all of them signed up to be a
counselor. Some were just interested in the MB process. It is
amazing the resources that can be found within either your own
troop or another local troop. Perhaps try working together
with other local troops in your area to sponser a merit badge
counselor training. Now many councils have the Youth
Protection training online.

I have a lot of good thoughts on the Engineer MB. Particularly where the boys are to compare the scout law to the engineering laws. WoW. I'll explain more later.

you might also find it handy to contact someone at a local community college or university. If you can navigate through websites pretty well, you might be able to find a few student engineering organizations that would be happy to organize a day for a few scouts to come to campus and cover all the materials related to that merit badge. Some ones to look for would be Theta Tau (Engineering Fraternity), Tau Beta Pi (engineering honor society), SAE (society of automotive engineers), SPS (society of physics students). You could also try contacting someone in a local chapter of Alpha Phi Omega... since they are loosely associated with BSA im sure they wouldnt mind going a little out of their way to point you in the direction of someone who could help you with your merit badge.

And if you happen to live within southwest wisconsin, we are hosting a merit badge day for Chemistry, Engineering, and Electronics.
