Actually, I'm doing Atomic Energy as we speak. It is
interesting, but I would strongly suggest taking Chemistry
before trying for this merit badge. I just took Chemistry last
year, and I'm still having trouble.

Using the worksheets on this site (thanks again, optimist),
I've been able to complete up to Requirement Five. All I have
left is Requirement 6, which is where I have to complete 3 out
of 10 requirements. I think I am probably going to build a
Geiger counter and use it to complete a few other
requirements.

I don't know much about science, but I would like to earn chemistry and electronics sometime, and after that maybe go into more advanced badges like nuclear science.

Kevin just turned 12. He did Atomic Energy at Merit Badge College this year. He loved it. Loved doing the research. Wants to do new badge even though it has the same badge number. But like the field.
We are lucky in that we have two leaders that work for the Nuclear power plant and teach the badge every year.

BSA has published a new merit badge pamphlet for the Energy Merit Badge, which was one of the oldest pamphlets around. The pamphlet was last updated in 1978, and the requirements in 1987.
The pamphlets have completely new requirements. Scouts that have the old pamphlet, or start the badge between now and January 1, 2006 can use the old requirements, or they can use the new ones at their option.
The new requirements are posted on the new usscouts.org server. at

Has anyone used the IEEE emeritbadges.org for Energy and Electronics? It looked like something the Scouts could do at their own pace.

I've done both badges, never used that. I did energy in 4 days and electronics in 1.

As an registered Counselor of Electricity and Electronics (and probabaly of Computers as our abundance of others qualified for that one drift away) - AND, as an IEEE member I didn't even know about this.
It looks pretty good and I'll make sure to bookmark it for future use.
Thanks for pointing it out.
Now, just to try and figure out how I missed this.
