Butterfly
In 2002 I was fortunate to be able to include some of our High
Adventure age scouts in a BioBlitz at Owasippe Scout
Reservation near Muskegon, MI. The BioBlitz was co-sponsored
by the Owasippe Staff Association (OSA), the Michigan Chapter
of The Nature Conservancy and the Chicago Area Council (CAC).
Our role was to identify potential breading site for the
Karner Blue Butterfly, a federal endnagered species, by
locating oak savanna and pine berren habitats with populations
of Lupine. Lupine is a beautiful wildflower that is critical
to the Karner Blue's success as it is the only plant its
caterpillers will eat.
I used this experience to help draw a real life experience to
the scouts earning Environmental Science merit badge. I also
include notes on how to tie the Karner Blue and the BioBlitz
into specific requirements. Be sure to visit the link to my
final report.
