My best advice is to read the merit badge book. If that doesn't help (or if you have already checked there), ask here -- like you just did!

Most of the folks on here will second my advice - GET THE BOOK.
You should always have a read through the book before working on the merit badge. If the answers aren't there, the book should at least point you in the right direction to find them.
Does your troop have a library or do the boys at least pass on the books they are done with? Somebody close should have this as it is an Eagle required.

To start off you need to get the MB Book. Second - it is your family - you should know whay it is important to individuals and society. No one outside your family - this board included can answer that. The same for how your actions affect other members.
If it is not written down then it is not an official rule

You have to have the book for almost any merit badge. It gives you the information that each and every requirement ask for. I expect the boys to read the books also. I have notes and will ask them questions from the books, this way I know they are reading the material.
I have two books for each of the badges I council. One for me to keep and make notes in and one for the boys to use if they don't have a book or regarding a couple of boys I know simply don't have the money to get one. We are lucky in that our troop has a pretty good library of badge books. We also keep the outdated ones and will make corrections and add them to the book when we are able to.

I actually just finished this one this morning. I’m used to helping kids in my troop so here are some questions to ask yourself:
For Req 1
Why are families important...?
1. In what ways does my mom/dad/brother/sister/... guide me?
2. Who can I trust the most?
How can the actions of…?
1. What would happen to my family if i dropped out of school?
2. What would happen to my family if my mom/dad lost his job?
3. What would happen if a member of my family was arrested?
4. What would happen if a member of my family won an award?
5. What would happen if some one in my family acted a certain way towards another member?
For req. 2
1. What chores do I do?
2. What do I do with my family?
3. How does my family feel about me?
Those questions that you ask yourself might help, but they might not. If they don’t I would suggest taking a break and trying again tomorrow when your relaxed.

These are all good questions. I also like to ask this: What does my family do which they would not have done without me? If you are the only boy, then boy scouts could be a good answer. However, if they did it in their youth, then you are not the influence.

One of my Scouts had the same question a couple years ago. I asked if he had read the MB pamphlet. He said the same thing that you did - he didn't have it. I let him borrow mine for a week. When he came back he had his worksheets completed and was ready to discuss all the requirements. Consider that another success for reading the pamphlet.
Perhaps you can answer why getting and reading the MB pamphlet isn't the first thing that a Scout does for a MB?

True, I too have seen so many boys over the years try to struggle through a merit badge without the pamphlet. It's always amazing how they respond once they find out all the information that is in there.
