Fishing MB requirement 1d

Postby Jean9 » Tue Jul 24, 2012 6:07 pm

Hi all,
My son is taking the Fishing MB at camp in a couple of weeks and we are working on the worksheets so that he can have the book stuff done for camp. We got to 1d and can't figure out exactly what the 5 safety principles are. We have the book but it doesn't list them in the safety section.
We have an idea what they are but want to make sure. My son has problems reading and taking notes so they suggested that we have the note parts done.
We think 3 of them are:
Never go fishing alone
Always make a trip plan
Make sure your parents (and/or other responsible adults) know where you are going and when you expect to return.

If a fishing MBC could let me know exactly what they are looking for in this requirement we would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Jeannine

Have you by chance looked in the Fishing merit badge booklet? I am sure the answers can easily be found there. I know people are not fans of buying the booklets but there is a lot of good information in them.

We have the booklet but haven't been able to find the list. If anyone knows where the list is and would tell me the page that would be great.

I only have the old book, but this requirement, which is currently 1c, was the last sentence of requirement 1. There's a chapter in the book on safety, and I can see several related to weather, catfish, etc.

I don't think this is a canned answer. Fly Fishing has the same requirement. There are more than 5 I'm sure your SON can come up with a little more research on his part.

Sorry folks, I misread the requirement. It says that he needs to name 5 not THE 5 safety policies. I thought there was a specific 5 we were looking for so I was going to make sure he got the 5 he was required. Since he doesn't have to have a specific 5 he can pick whichever ones he wants.
I would love to give my son the book and let him do it on his own, but due to his disabilities that isn't an option right now. We are hoping that he will be able to do that in the future, but he can't at this time. He completely understands the concepts just can't read the words or get his thoughts on paper. My son tells me what to type in his worksheet after we go over the information together. We are only working on the first aid and information requirements because it would be too difficult for him to write it in during the MB class.
I don't expect my son to gain too many ranks or a lot of merit badges in his time in Scouts, we just want him to have as much fun and enjoy the camping and outdoor activities that he loves so much. If my helping him read and fill out the worksheets on the more academic requirements so that he can get the badges he wants and is able to do the hands on requirements for then I am going to help him to do it.

Sorry for misreading the requirements,

Without understanding your son's disability, I feel obliged to point out that nothing need be written down for this merit badge. If he can discuss, explain, name and identify, etc., he can meet the requirements.

I only point this out in case the boys were all told to write their answers and you're helping your son for that reason. This bulletin board is littered with threads about merit badge counselors who required the worksheets to be completed. Of course, they're great for organizing one's thoughts in preparation for discussing, explaining, etc., but the requirements are the requirements and none of them include worksheets.

I know that they are supposed to be able to discuss it with the counselors, but I was told by our camp organizer to go over it with him and send the worksheet so he will have the info for class. My older son can't remember exactly how they do it at camp because he hasn't done a merit badge class there in 3 or 4 years. I am still going to work on it with him so that he is prepared for class and if they need the worksheets then he will have them. If they don't then it will be a review for him during class.
