I am looking for a project in leather that includes at least 4
of the skills for working with leather. I'd also like ideas
for the braiding project.

If anyone knows a good book on the subject that has projects
appropriate for boys ages 10 and 11, then I'd be glad to get a
book. The books I've seen have really complicated projects
that I think would be too hard for boys these ages. The
projects online look too easy and do not include some of the
skills needed for leatherwork completion.

The boys did make leather pouches for art, but those did not
include doing all the things needed for them to count in
leather.

Some of our scouts just finished this at summer camp. What
they used was called a "wampum bag" It is essentially a little
bag. There was a pattern in the kit. The scouts had to cut out
the pattern and trace in onto the piece of leather (that 1).
Then cut the leather out around where they traced (that is 2).
Then use a punch and punch all the holes for the pattern (that
is 3). and then finally lace up the bag. (that is 4). They
then had the scouts turn the bags inside out and "dress the
edges" of the bag (that is the 5th item).

I'm not sure where the kit come from because it was one that
was available at camp. I still have the pattern I believe and
could possibly get it on the web if one wanted me to.

I found a leather bag kit on ScoutStuff.org. I'm not sure if
it's the same bag or not. Here's the link:

That isn't the same kit they used, but it would work providing
it is not already cut to size and not prepunched.

The problem I find with most kits is they are cut to size and
already prepunched.

Hi again,

Yes. That link is the bag that the boys got. It really just
involves stitching and not the other skills. I did find a
pattern online and have that in my notebook. It's pretty much
the same bag but would need to be cut and hole punched.
Perhaps I could enlarge the pattern and make bigger bags for
the Scout book or something.

Thanks for the replies.

We just returned from camp, and the kit they had us use was a
knife case.
the boys had to stitch, punch holes for a snap closure, hammer
impressions into the leather, and finish the leather with a
leather conditioner.

I did what your scouts did for my Leatherwork Merit Badge,
ScoutmasterBob. I still use that for my knife case, so it's a
worthwhile project.

I also did a knife case when I did leatherwork at camp. We had
to lace together precut parts, put two rivets in near the top,
stamp on our initials, and condition the leather. The kit we
used can be found here:
http://www.scoutstuff.org/items/ww17280/index.html

For the braiding project, we just took two pieces of vinyl
lace and braided them into a small key chain, as long as a
person's pinkie. The materials we used can be found here:
