An excellent place to take Geology MB in and round PA. is
Laurel Caverns just outside of Uniontown,Pa.
www.laurelcaverns.com

They also Have Forestry,Climbing and a very nice camp ground
and within 20 minutes of some of the Best Whitewater in the
East.
The Climbing MB is Done In the Cave so weather is no problem.

Can anyone tell me what was specifically changed on teh Geology merit badge in June? My son got a partial at camp and we got the merit badge book then to get it finished up (new edition). Just realized that it was JUSt redone and am seriously wondering if the camp was possibly still using the old one - don't want my son to be duplicating or not doing the "right" stuff to get it finished up.

If your son started working on the badge with the old requirements, then he needs to complete the badge using the old requirements. If he started the badge using the new requirements those are the ones he needs to complete the badge work with. But you can't mix the requirements.

You can check the requirements through www.usscouts.org. Paul Wolfe does a great job of updating the badge requirements. In fact Paul listed the new requirements earlier on this site.

The camp we went to did things a bit differently. They did not use merit badge cards, and you did not choose merit badges until you got there. At the end of camp, the troop received a sheet stating who got completes on which merit badges and what people needed to complete on the partials. As I knew he had a partial on geology, I got the book right away so he could start working on finishing it up. I just realized yesterday that it had been updated when I looked more extensively at the book. Had our SM check with the camp and found out that they had used the old requirements. I know that he "must" complete the requirements under the old, but just wanted to find what specifically had been changed so that we can find what we need in the new book since that is all we have available.

Once a Scout "begins" working on a Merit Badge, the current requirements (at that time) may be used until he completes the badge or turns 18, which ever comes first.

Once "revised" requirements are officially released, they may be used in lieu of the "outgoing" requirements. However, a Scout may, at his option, start the MB using either set of requirements until the new MB pahmplet has been updated. Once the MB phamplet has been revised and published, the old requirements are officially dead (except, to those who have already started) and, at this point, a Scout can no longer BEGIN working on the MB under the old requirements. If you are confused, try looking at it this way... The logic behind all this is simple... Even though a Scout (or MBC) knows that new requirements have been released and that the MB phamplet is currently under revision, he (the SCOUT) has the right to choose... A) He may BEGIN working on the MB using the "new" requirements or, B) he may BEGIN by using the "old" requirements (but, still current edition of MB phamplet) until the "revised" MB phamplet is published.

Whenever requirements do change, and a Scout has already started on the MB under the old requirements, he always has the option to complete the Merit Badge under the new requirements. BUT, regardless of his choice, the Scout must complete one set of requirements -or- the other... old requirements cannot be mixed and matched up with some of the new requirements, or vice versa, to complete any MB.

I know he can use either, but since most of it is done under the old, we'll finish up that way. I just wanted to find out the differences since we have the new book, and I'm assuming that the information in the new book can still be used - just not following the requirements.
