Rifle MB - distance

Postby svohoo » Thu Apr 17, 2008 4:24 pm

Requirement 2k (option A) says

"Using a .22 caliber rimfire rifle and shooting from a bench rest or supported prone position at 50 feet, fire five groups (three shots per group) that can be covered by a quarter. Using these targets, explain how to adjust sights to zero."

Most of the ranges that we have access to are set up for 25 yards (75 ft). Can I extrapolate the diameter of a quarter out to 25 yards and have them shoot at that distance? In other words, if a quarter measures .957 in, the same included angle that covers it at 50 ft covers a 1.436 in diameter circle at 25 yards. Then, for the scoring requirements of 2l, could I print (or copy) the targets scaled up by the same amount? I wouldn't "flunk" anyone based on these extrapolated requirements - if a scout were having trouble I would then make other arrangements for him to actually shoot at 50 ft - but if they are successful can I sign them off?

Thanks.

Iwould stick to a 50 ft range as prescribed .You are not supposed to make additions or subtraction s from the MB requirements.

Talk to the rangemaster. Tell him the requirements. I'll bet he's addressed this before, and if he doesn't have target stands to place at 50 feet, he'll probably let your scouts make them (see Pioneering MB). You just need to reserve a time for your troop.

There is even a more important issue in dealing with 50 ft vs 25 feet. 25 feet is the standard distance used for BB rifles, while 50 ft is that for 22 cal rifles. At 25 feet, the chance of a bullet being deflected back to the shoorters is more than 100 times greater than at 50 feet. Most certified range instructors will NOT allow a 22 cal rifle to be shot at 25 feet.

Most ranges will have stands that will hold targets. Easy to move to 50ft. This a standard distance for competetive shoots. Real surprised if only longer distances were offered.

MhJacobson - Where is the cite for the 100 times greater risk???? Never have seen that stat.

The original post was about 25 yards, not 25 feet. A bit of a difference :D .

Anyway, the original post referred to 25 yards, not 25 feet.

All,

Thanks for your wisdom & guidance. It sounds like the consensus is go for 50', so that's what we'll do. If we come with a stack of 50' targets, they ought to let us shoot at 50'.

Each range is different and each state has different laws governing the use of a range and required backs tops etc.....

My range has a .22 range that includes 40, 60,70 and 100 yards berms. If we need 50 feet for Scouting (or NRA program), we can only fire when no one else is using the range. There is a line marked for 50 feet from the firing line. My son, daughter and I are out there every week working on the NRA smallbore rifle qualification requirements.

For the Camp in my council, the range is a 50 foot range with a huge back stop. Actually, we shot into thesideof the hill. It looks like a power shovel scooped out the range. The archery range is similar.
