Nuclear Science Merit Badge -- Cloud Chambers

Postby ancientdruid » Mon Sep 03, 2012 8:18 pm

Does anyone have tips on making a cloud chamber? I tired and got a very cold glass jar but no cloud inside and no tracks. Maybe it was trying to do this in my garage during the Louisiana summer. What kind of jar works best? (I would think short is good) Just how saturated with alcohol should the material be? Should the jar be cooled instead of being at room temperature? I think I had more than enough dry ice -- using pellets in a styrofoam plate so that the metal top of the glass jar (which is upside down) was well frosted over.

I am getting ready for a Nuclear Science Merit Badge workshop in late October in Louisiana and am trying to get this cloud chamber demo to work.
