I am a photographer and marit badge counceler in photography.
I feal that with the advent of digital photography, and the
vast acceptance of it in the professional community, the
scouts need to address it when they pass the marit badge. I
propose that a choice be allowed for the scout to do dark room
or digital processing and explain the process he used for his
picture. All the other parts of the marit badge are the same
in either process. The purpose of a marit badge is to aquaint
a scout in an area that he can use in his adult life.

I have a quetion on this one. Kevin worked on this badge at Merit Badge College. The worksheet that the counselor gave them to work with has different requirements that the book. If you go by the requirements in his book he has completed all the requirements. But the counselor did not sign off all the points. Because on the work sheet he did not complete one requirement.
He has called the counselor several times and has not gotten a call back.
Should I simply find a different counselor and let them go back over the work and sign off on the missing requirement.

Sounds like the counselor at the merit badge college didn't quite understand the merit badge program. I would contact another certified photography merit badge counselor and have him complete the MB using the requirements listed in the MB Booklet.

The first step would be to find out what the exact requirements were at the time. I did some quick research and that merit badge's requirements haven't changed since 1998. Unless Kevin started working on it prior to 1998, he should be using the Photography merit badge requirements listed on MeritBadge.com. Please cross check those requirements against the worksheet and the merit badge pamphlet.

Once Kevin figures out whether or not he is using the correct requirements he will probably need to find a new merit badge counselor since the current one is unresponsive to his needs.

No Kevin crossed over into Boy Scouts in December 2003. So he should have been doing the newest requirements. I have called a different counselor (yes I know he should be doing it. ) but he is frustrated right now because the original one won't return calls. If fact we have two boys from our troop that have the same problem. The counselor told to have one of the boys call her. She will go over the work sheet and sign off.
So tomorrow Kevin will call her.

Kevin called the new counselor. She is going to meet with both boys this week and go over their work sheets and the book requirements.
She told him that if she feels he completed the requirements as written in the book she will sign off on the Blue Card. He feels better now. He was upset that the original counselor wouldn't call him back. Especially since he was the one that discovered that the worksheet requirements and the ones in the book were different.
So I have a happy Scout again.
Thanks everyone.

The new counselor called Kevin back Monday night. They met last night and she went over his work sheet and signed off on his badge. He was so excited and proud. He will give his blue card to the Scout Master next Monday night. He did say that next MBC he is going to make sure the requirements in the book and the work sheet match before he starts working on the badge.

A new Photography merit badge pamphlet was recently issued (mid 2005), with new requirements. I haven't seen it yet, but have been told it now covers digital photography and other changes to the field since the last update.

I have the new Photography MB pamphlet now, and have posted the updated requirements on the USSSP web site at http://usscouts.org/mb/mb083.html
It does, of course, now have information pertaining to digital photography and cameras.

I'm not really a cranky old man -- I just play one on the Internet...

The new requirements dumb down the Merit Badge. I liked the old requirements' focus on composition. I'm pretty disappointed. I would have been happy if they had just changed requirement 2 from "expose a roll of film" to "take at least 24 pictures."
