You have access to here, than you have access to a very vast storage of all sorts of data, which you don't have to wait for someone to post :P

I could give it to you but it's just too simple to research - try the links above or google it.

You've already heard it here... the Merit Badge Book.

But to amplify: In general, Merit Badge Books are, in my son's experience, the ONLY reference resources you need to complete the requirements. And, if they're not, they direct you to other resources that help with understanding the material.

I guess this has probably been covered in another thread, but I just don't understand why Scouts and Adults haven't figured this out yet. It's not like the Merit Badge program is new.

For those Merit Badges that were particularly enjoyable, there's a lot of benefit in revisiting them even after a Scout has earned the badge. For instance, even after earning Leatherworking, my son kept the book so he can go back and do some of the other projects that are in there.

For some of the other badges he's earned, and doesn't wish to pursue any further, he donates to the Troop library for another boy to use.

I appreciate your help MDeagle.....this is really new to us. I have tried to use the downloadable worksheets, but haven't used the booklets. I"ll look into it.

Sometimes it is easy for someone to give a very "smart a" answer that is not in the true sense of scouting.......somewhere I read a scout is courteous. Again I appreciate your answer MDeagle.

The Merit Badge books are published for a reason. They give you most of the information needed to complete any Merit Badge. SOrry to say alot of leaders do not stress the use of them and the youh are totally ubprepared for the MB. I would like to see the first requirement for all meriot badges be REquirement #1 Read the Merit Badge Book.
I do CLimbing Merit Badge every weekend and the boys have no idea of anything in the merit badge. SO this year we are requiring that they have read or at least reviewed the MB Book.WE are not adding to the requirements. WE are making sure they are prepared to take the MB. The Work sheets are great But they do not give you the information needed to complete the MB.

I'm glad I could help. The downloaded sheets are also a great help, because they give you a great place to record the results of your independent work and help you figure out which requirements you still need. This site does a very good job of keeping up-to-date worksheets posted.

You won't be able to get downloadable copies of the Merit Badge Books. You'll have to get the hard copies from somewhere. You said you're new, so your Troop may have a Merit Badge Book Library that you don't know about. Just be sure the one you borrow from there is the most current version, as they are updated from time to time. The Troop libarian or a qualified adult can help you do this.

If you don't live near a Scout Store, you can buy the hard copy online at Scoutstuff.org (or is it scoutstuff.com???). Anyway, they don't cost that much, somewhere around $5, although if you get it online you'll have to pay shipping, too. Still a very good investment. They're well-written and they really walk you through the requirements in an easy-to-understand way. The craft ones, in particular, have great projects in them... more than you need to do just the merit badge requirements.

Good luck to you as you continue your journey. I will have to say, though, that some adult in your Troop, certainly your merit badge counselor, should have clued you into the merit badge books.

we had a little shake up in our troop, as far as leadership goes. We are sort of starting new, so alot of us are going to try to find counseleors. I have a BoyScout store about 10 miles away. I might just start building a library. Thanks for all the good help.

something was said about smart answers. well heres my take on that one. If I answer every question with a truthful answer then what has someone learned? not much Now if I give you someplace to look for your answer what have you learned? how to research. now what has each person learned? the first one the answer to a question the second one a lifetime of knowing how to research something.

It wasn't a reference to "smart" answers, it was a reference to "smart a" answers. I believe he was referring to the sanctimonious and condescending sarcasm doled out from the top of the proverbial ivory tower of Scouting.

Sanctimony? WHats That?

Boy Maricopasem you hit the nail right on the head. just look at some of the answers you have given the look up the words you used in the dictionary and wow there is your picture. you answers are short smart and just downright stupid. thank goodness I have nothing to do with you or your group of scouts.

This thread is a great opportunity to remind folks about one of the best resources a troop can have, a merit badge pamphlet library. Check out the following link for information on how to develop one for your troop:

you know how important they are and I know how important they are but there are leaders out there that do feel a boy needs to read the MB book they feel it is the counselors job to teach the scout everything and that bis just plain wrong. The youth need to be prepared for the MB they are working or going to work on and there are scout masters out there that feel this is not important.

Even though a MB Book might be old the information in them for "most" MB do not really change. Requirements change but the basic information does not. Each year a new requirement book is printed this is the official list of requirements. As posted a while ago it is really expensive to do a complete rewrite of a MB book.

That's tremendous! Which books did you get? I know you're working Music, but what other badges are on your target list?

My son has already bought all the books for the badges he wants at summer camp, and is already having fun just looking at them!
