It's probably so that you will learn different types of knots
for different situations... or they are mean and horrible
people. Either way.

There isn't a way to really remember all the lashings besides
to have it taught really well to you or to drill on it 24/7. I
was lucky enough to have a scout from Israel(where they are
all about lashes and knots) teach me the merit badge. It made
much easier to achive the badge. My only recommendation to you
it to constantly practice until you get it right.

AT the 2001 National Jamboree the Most visited area of the
Action centers was the Pioneering Area.

PRACTICE....PRACTICE.....PRACTICE....and PRACTICE some
more....

Our Troop keeps a pile of wooden poles of various sizes and
every few months a plan is put together for a lashing project
(tower, bridge, etc...) Every scout meeting has a different
knot that is taught. there are some great books out that show
all kinds of usefull knots/lashings.

maybe if you take this at camp you could remember them. after all you would be tying them all week, and the counselor or another boy could help you if you have trouble.

One way to get going on lashings, is go ahead and try to build some of the simpler pioneering projects....

Start with tripods & A-Frames, move on to larger projects like Rope Bridges & Signal Towers.

Trust me, by doing the projects, you figure out why to use what lashing where, and you gain good experience, while guiding the boys in building fun projects! :D

The pioneering area of the action center is always the best attended area of the action center. There are 4 action centers at the Jamboree

NE Area 4 Venturing Chairman

Our SM has a campout about every 2 years where he guarantees any scout that goes on the campout will complete this badge. He has them work on lashings for a couple of weeks prior to the campout. He covers every requirement during this weekend and at the campout they build a monkey bridge over a creek or a tower.

They love this campout and putting their knowledge to use in a finished, yet cool project is the most incentive for them. Who wouldn't love to walk across a creek on something they just built? Perfect May trip!

I signed up to become a councilor for this badge as soon as I was able to when i became an adult. I am doing this as well with my troop, however I am stringing the requirements out over the period of 2 months. Starting this past may i had the whole troop as a group learn the basics all over and then worked into the lashings part.

This month (june), we are going to work on more complicated lashings and the final requirement being at summer camp where they build a gateway and one more structure.

I figured two months because with all the sports our scouts do in my troop they can come to a meeting and two learn something and if they have sports and choose not to do the badge thats fine with me. I started out with 20 boys. With the help of a couple of my older friends who know knots just as well as i do, we have been able to keep the interest in most of the boys. We have only had 5 kids drop out from the badge due to sports and school, however they will be back come this week.

actually my troop will be going to

Krietenstein Scout Camp
Crossroads of America Council
Center Point, IN

we're really not happy with the camp now, becuase they dont have a great merit badge selection.. expect for the option of archeology which almost all of our boys will be taking because it is almost non existant to find a councilor for the badge in detroit area council.
