If you have a radio licence (like my screen name), then its a breeze. Just show and they pass you sight on sence. If you don't, you learn basic teory on the EMS (eletromagintic spectum), type of progration (i.e line of sight, scatter, etc.), scemantics. There, it splits into three options, SW (short wave) listening, Commerical Radio, and 'Ham Radio'

The basics of it (not all the recs are listed) are as followed

SW- listen for at least 6 hours (non-constuive) at different times of the day

Commerical-Plan a 1hour program including service ads, commericals, and news

Ham Radio-Vist a ham radio station (if you have a radio, it counts)

We are talking about doing our Spring Camporee on a Radio theme. We have 8-10 leaders in our district that are Ham Radio operators and have said they will give their time and radios. I think it will be fun and educational.
I remember them talking about there being a Boy Scout Ham night once a year where you can talk to scouts all over the world.

Lynda - I think you're referring to JOTA - Jamboree on the Air. It's a yearly event, this year it's Oct. 15/16. Here's a link to it

Radio Merit Badge Website

Postby k2gw » Tue Jan 30, 2007 11:03 am

Hi guys!

We've had a lot of fun helping a lot of Scouts get their Radio Merit Badge. Many do it in just one day.

To make it easier for Scouts to meet the requirements, I've created a new website which you can reach at

http://k2gw.tripod.com/radiomeritbadge/

It also helps counsleors teach the badge. It would be great if the Merit Badge Reference center added a link to this site under Radio Merit Badge. Some of the other links they have listed no longer work.

One of the purposes of merit badges is to introduce Scouts to different career fields and hobbies. HAM Radio is a popular hobby. Personally, after 20 years in the Army Signal Corps, I am happy to leave that hobby to others.
