If local laws prohibit the launching of model rockets, do the following activity: Make a model of a NASA rocket. Explain the functions of the parts. Give the history of the rocket.

I am the technology area director of Camp Emerson in Idyllwild, CA. Recently I have discussed with the camp manager, director, and program director about adding several meritbadges to the Technology area. Unfortunitly we are unable to launch model rockets as the forest is in a drought. Requirement 5 states: If local laws prohibit the launching of model rockets, do the following activity: Make a model of a NASA rocket. Explain the functions of the parts. Give the history of the rocket.

I was wondering what type of model they mean. Plastic model which you put together with glue or the type you would launch or the type you launch but without the engine. Any suggestions would help.

I would read that to be some sort of scale model of an actual rocket. Otherwise, "The give a history of this type of rocket," part of requirement would make no sense at all.

Just my opinion.

It's a model of a real rocket, launchable or not.

My son just did this one last year and could not do a launch. So he had to search high and low for a model of a real rocket. Let me tell you it was hard to find and there was virtually no plastic type model. All the ones that were around when I was a kid were no longer produced. We ended up using a launchable rocket that was a model of Mercury Atlas. He looked up the history of it and gave presentation of on it. I've searched the estes rockets www site and it's no longer on their product list.

Thanks for your help, Im going to be going to be presenting the information to the camp manager within a week or two. Ive choosen to go with a Estes Gemini rocket that only costs around ten dollars. The real challange will come later with setting up a lession plan and training the staff member. So the scouts can launch something ive setting up some resources for launching the water rockets near our camps lake or in our meadow.

Again, Thanks for your help!
