Surveying MB - Requirement History?

Postby LV2SRVY » Fri Aug 24, 2007 4:14 pm

Greetings,

I am wanting to find information on the history of the Surveying MB requirements. Surveying was one of the first merit badges and continues to this day.

I would like to write an article for my state surveying society's newsletter about the surveying merit badge. I would like to include in the article the first requirements and how the requirements have changed over the years with technology and practice.

Anybody here a collector that would have old requirement pamphlets? Or does anyone know a good source for this information? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

I don't have a pamphlet but maybe you might get lucky on eBay.

Being a counselor, I have the current 2006 requirements and the 2002 printing of the 1992 edition (I assume no changes between 1992 and 2002).

I recently got the 1942 version on eBay, just waiting for it to arrive in the mail. There are a couple versions on there for big bucks (1920 version for $50  and 1930 version for $75  ) that are a little pricy for me. There are also others in lots of several books and I really didn't want to buy a whole lot for just one book, but I may end up doing that and then relisting the ones I don't need.

Also, the original scout handbook has been reprinted (with the requirements), and I'll probably get a copy from the local scout shop to use as a reference.

The US Scouting Service Project website is currently the best place to go for what you're looking for...

Go here: Current Merit Badge Pamphlet and Requirement Revision Dates

Maybe (soon) we can get something comparable up on our Wiki.

Old Scout handbooks had the merit badge requirements listed in them. Search around and see if you get lucky; your search doesn't have to be limited to just the pamphlets.

Great idea Swim has. I have my old collectibles in storage, so that doesn't help. The sites I like to wander through (sageventure and scouttrader) didn't have that type information and I'm looking for more ideas to help with this. It would be of interest to others anyway.

Dan,

See my post on the other site you asked for help. I have one of those expensive white merit badge books and a 1912 Handbook with the requriements if you still need the info.
