I am glad to see the changes in the Scholarship Merit Badge. Especially the one about extracricular activities. Our school does not allow 6th graders to join clubs. So it has pretty much kept them from working on the badge until 7th grade. Not with the added requirement they can use any activity that they have to work on as a team.

They can't join Clubs? I just have to hear more details on how a school can direct or rather deny the furthering of interests of its pupils. Does this include Church Groups, Sorry Pastor, little Johnny cant be in the bible study club because his school forbids it?

Yes. The school limits 6th grade on clubs. You can't join things like Chess Club and such until 7th grade. I questioned this and was told that many times the adjustment rom elementary school to middle school can be hard and they felt it best that kids consentrate on class work. Not sure I agree but understand their point a little.
When my daughter went to college her school did not allow students to live off campus until they had 20 semester hours completed.

Most Middle Schools restrict club membership. It just works better. I have been in education for 34 years and I agree with it.

I actally do agree with it. But I also know that there are lots of kids that can handle both. I was glad to see that they are given another option other than clubs. Kevin's science class breaks up into teams and does research projects. They have to work on them outside of school. He is liking it. And the two kids it works with are great. His counselor said it will count since they have to work as a team and have to report their findings as a team.
