If new scouts are looking for an easy merit badge to do at
summer camp woodcarving is great It is fun and not nearly as
hard as it seems and is so much better than basketry hope this
helps

Plus you end up with a really cool neckerchief slide that you
can wear the rest of your years in scouting....

To encourage my scouts to work on woodcarving at camp, I
bought a cheap set of wood tools that I take with me to camp.
It makes it easier the carve some of the details with a sharp
gouge than it is a dull pocket knife.

That's a great idea.... I bet the same would be true with
Leatherworking...if more scouts had access to the tools other
than just a summer camp...they could work on that one year
round too!

It is true some of the boys would do some of the badges like woodcarving ,metalwork, leather work if they had exposure to tools.

I bring a toolbox to camp with some tools ,glue, tapelarge sewing needles, etc .The scouts used the supplies to complete many badges at camp.

For wood carving I suggest some of the protective hand devices that help prevent cuts. Gouges are extremely sharp so is a pocketknife.
