How many of you, Scouts and Scouters, participate in Skiing and Snowboarding at local Ski Areas during the Winter Season?
How many of your Troops have Ski/Snowboard Trips to Ski Areas during the Winter Season?
How many of you Ski or Snowboard more then 10 times a year?
Just a quick survey...thanks!

As a youth I skied frequently. Not as much recently. Largely do to cost and time restraints. Utah has some programs for local 4th-6th graders to ski for almost free (38 lift passes for $15). My sons have taken advantage of some of those things and I have skied with them a few times each year.
As a youth, we went skiing once as a varsity team. It was too expensive for troop funds and we each paid our own way.
Funding rules in LDS scouting units will not allow us to plan pay-your-own-way activities anymore, so when the troop can't afford it, it doesn't happen.

Our Council schedules a ski outing at a nearby ski area for a Sunday in each month from December through March. The December one is before the holiday week and is only open about 50% of the time. There are other Councils there from nearby states, too. The rates are good, the instruction pretty good, and the slopes OK (good for beginners).
There is another ski area in the central part of the state that offers more involved programs to Scouts. They send and/or bring us info each year. They have programs that include bunkhouse type overnight arrangements that the one our Council uses doesn't.

We take our troop to a Scout Camp in Lake George, NY, then take the Scouts to Gore Mtn. in the Adirondacks. We do this the first weekend in February, and have been for 10 to 15 years! Most members of the troop have Snow Sports merit badge because of it.

Something that everyone in NW Pa wishes would go away at this time of year.

I used to ski alot as a youth. lived about 30 minutes from the ski resort.
Now in my older days with a bad knee and a bad ankle, I don't hit the slopes anymore other than as an observer.
My son really enjoys it, and he gets out about 10-15 times a year between Scout trips, Ski Club in school, and just a plain old desire to ski.
Now we live about an hour from the slopes.
Council does have a ski day at one of the local resorts, and the venture crews usually sponsor a day. both are great prices and not to be missed.

Reason for Poll:
The National Ski Patrol in the next 6 months will be looking into ways of effectively recruiting Young Adults. Earlier this month the National Ski Patrol revived the National Young Adult Program. The National Ski Patrol and BSA have a nice history, about 20-25 years ago the Explorer Ski Safety Program was created between the two service organizations. After the National Ski Patrol halted the Young Adult Program the NSP/BSA Program lost momentum.
The new National Coordinator of the National Ski Patrol's Young Adult Program will be looking into strengthening relationships with Young Adult organizations such as the BSA.
I am sure there are quite a few Scouts (and Scouters too!) in the BSA that have Ski/Snowboard experience and with the opportunity may look into joining the National Ski Patrol.
