Whitewater is actually done in a Whitewater Canoe not a raft

I told you I would post a web site

www.wilderness-voyageurs.com

This is one of several But The Park Service uses them for all
of their stuff so you might figure they are a step up.

Recently on the Olympics we in Western Pa found out How great a white water area we really have. Our own "Youghiogheny" was mentioned as one of the greatest white water areas in the world as the flow can be controlled by the dam in Confluence ,Pa. Youghiogheny is a Lenni Lenape word for River that bends upon itself.

Our troop has been there numerous times over the last several years....ALWAYS a great time and you can camp at the Ohiopyle State Park. I would highly recommend this whitewater rafting trip!
Not too expensive either!

Our troop did the "Yough" this summer, used one of the larger commercial rafting companies. We had a guide in the boat with us. It was a blast, highly recommended.

I'm not the Whitewater counselor, but he asked my advice (so I'm asking yours). There's an older Scout in our troop who is taking a structured Sea Kayaking course that culminates in a sea paddle across the sound to an island. He wants to count it for requirement 13: "Participate in a whitewater trip using either a canoe or kayak on a Class I or Class II river." (How Class I or even II counts as "whitewater" is beyond me, but that's another thread.) The requirement reads "river". His argument is that 'river' doesn't necessarily have to mean freshwater, and that the channel he'll be paddling in does, in fact, fit the definition of a river. Would you count it, or require a separate trip down what we all immediately think of as a river?

IMO it does not count. The idea is to experience the Rapids and and navigating around rocks of a river. There is no white water in a bay or ocean.

The Middle Yough from Confluence Pa to Ohiopype is a class I-III river.

Reading the water is also part of this MB.Read it wrong and you swim

I love sea-kayaking, but it obviously does not count for Whitewater MB.

But check out the "whitewater" at Skookumchuk Rapids in BC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlkxjmmwgUk

I do not do it Too Old at this time. When I was young a foolish you got arrested for doing it. The river above the falls is called the Middle Yough and is class I and II and one III. Very nice paddle. The area below the falls is called the lower Young and is some of the best Whitewater anywhere mostly class III and IV. Now the river above the Yough dam at Confluence in Friendsville,MD is called the Upper Yough and it is class IV and V not for beginners or inexperienced boaters.

What it seems like he is talking about is the tidal inlets and small creeks that rise and fall with the tides. The merit badge is talking about actual rapids with rocks and curves and running water. So I am like everyone else NO it would not count.
