phony e mails using meritbadge causing damage

Postby deweylure » Sun Apr 16, 2006 9:07 am

I would like to report the following problem. I was sent an e-mail in RE atopic of Meritbadges. The e-mail was opened and then came the pop ups and other bad things youy do not want your computer to do. I do not think it was done intentionally by a Scouter or at least I hope not. To all the other valuable leaders be careful. From now on I WILL NOT ACCEPT E-MAILS FROM ANY ONE I DO NOT KNOW.
This forum is a great thing and I know sometimes fake scouts can get on to promote their own website or do othern things

Unfortunately I can not tell who sent it but I do know it was not an attachment

Since it did not come directly from here I would hope it is not associated with this forum. If something bad comes here we will try to remove it asap. We do save it to help with criminal investigation if possible. LAst year we were attacked and actually followed their trail to the college they were attending. The college was more than happy to cooperate and dish out punishment. Really not sure what they did but the college said they would handle it. We started at that time screening new members and although one slips through at time it has helped. We do have the ability to block email addresses, names, and ip addresses.

If you get another one, please cut and paste the code, including headers, and and send it to me... not as an attachment, but as text. Thanks.

Although your able to block ip addresses, phpbb is also known like with every other forum of accepting proxy addresses. These are a constant annoyance, because you cant just block one and the problem will go away. All the user has to do is open the page he got te proxy from, enter the url and hit enter over and over again, creating several "guest members" whom have the ability to post here. That person can also create real member names and have those spam as well.

There is also a code, which you can input in the text field when making a post that can redirect you to another site. This just causes a bigger annoyance because these posts cant be deleted through the board it self, but it has to be deleted through the PMA.

Im dealing with this type of thing on my message board for the last 2 months, and a friend of mines board just got attacked the other day. Its a real shame that someone can just do this for no good reason.
