Scouting by the numbers (statistics)

I have read the "100 BoyScouts" stats and the "100 Boys" stats and per cent of high school students who are scouts.
I hear the numbers at COHs. I have also heard different figures of these stats.
However, I never see/hear the sources of these statistic, the dates, or how they have been generated.
Who did the study of high school students to find out that 85% of the Student Council Presidents where scouts?
