[FAQ] Acronyms and Other Boy Scout Phrases Used Here...

Postby optimist » Sun Aug 15, 2004 10:03 am

Here's a list of acronyms and other Boy Scout phrases you'll likely find in these forums.

(Instructions: If you think of an acronym or phrase unique to our forums, post it in here... one of the Counselors or the Advancement Chairman will add it to this list; and then, your original message will be deleted.)

ACRONYMS CONCERNING BOY SCOUTS and ADVANCEMENT

Safety - Safety - Safety
G2SS, Guide To Safe Scouting
TDL, Two-deep Leadership
YPT, Youth Protection Training

Advancement -- All ranks
MB, Merit Badge (No restrictions other than 18th birthday)
ER, Eagle-required MB
MBC, Merit Badge Counselor
SMC, Scoutmaster's Conference -- Must be conducted by a UL. More than one may be conducted. Though often considered to be "against the rules", or at least faux pax, the SMC may be conducted at any time by the UL, even if he or she is a relative, even for Eagle.
BOR, Board of Review -- Must be last item for advancement. Typically conducted by three (or more) MCs, and never by a UL or any person of which the candidate is also the child, ward or relative thereof.

Advancement -- Scout - First Class
"The requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class ranks may be worked on simultaneously; however, these ranks must be earned in sequence."

Advancement -- Star - Eagle
Active tenure, active service in a Position(s) of Responsibility, and work on a Service Project(s), must be accomplished while a "_____" Scout. For example, the moment the BOR signs off on a Scout's Life BOR, he immediately becomes a Life Scout--at that very moment... not before, not after, not the date of the COH, not the date the Scout receives his (Life Rank) Advancement Card, which is supposed to, but may not, reflect the date of the BOR.
Advancement -- Eagle
ESLP, Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project
SMC, Scoutmaster's Conference (for Eagle) -- Must be conducted by a UL. Although more than one may be conducted, the "date of completion" for the SMC for Eagle must always be AFTER everything -and- I mean everything (except, of course, the ESBOR)... otherwise, National will kick it back.
ESBOR, Eagle Scout Board of Review -- Three to six people sit on this board. (Note, I did not say registered Scouters, MCs, or anything like that. Just no ULs.)

Troop Committee
* No Adult Leader may serve in two positions within the same unit, except the COR, who may also serve as an MC or the CC.
* Committee Members sit on BORs, but may not sign off on SMCs.

IH, Institution Head -- doesn't pay any reg. fee, unless he/she is an active leader in the unit.
EO, Executive Officer (identical to EO, just different words)
COR, Chartered Organization Representative
CR, (Ditto)
CC, Committee Chairman
MC, Committee Member

Unit Leaders

* ULs sign Blue Cards (start and finish) and SMCs, but may not sit on -or- sign BOR.

Adults
SM, Scoutmaster
ASM, Asst. Scoutmaster
UL, SM or ASM

Youth
JASM, Jr. Asst. Scoutmaster (appointed by SM)

PLC, Patrol Leaders Council

SPL, Sr. Patrol Leader (Normally elected by youth, but may, on occasion, be appointed by SM)
ASPL, Asst. Sr. Partol Leader (Appointed by SPL)
QM, Quartermaster (Appointed by SPL)
PL, Partol Leader (Appointed by SPL)
APL, Asst. Partol Leader (Appointed by PL)

LS = Lone Scout
LSP = Lone Scout Program

Misc. Stuff
CM, Cubmaster (not Committee Member, which is MC.)
Crew, Venture Crew

District/Council
UC, Unit Commissioner
ADC, Asst. District Commissioner
DC, District Commissioner
RTC, Round Table Commissioner

Paid Professionals
DE, District Executive (Paid Professional)
DD, District Director (fancy name for a DE)
SE, Scout Executive, a.k.a. Council Executive.

OTHER ACRONYMS

BSA, Boy Scouts of America
OA, Order of the Arrow
NESA, National Eagle Scout Association
NSJ, National Scout Jamboree
CSC, Council Service Center

PHRASES and TERMS

"National" -- Generally refers to the "corporate" office of the BSA, located in Irving, TX.

"Summer Camp" -- refers to six days and five nights at a facility run by (or approved by) a BSA Council.

"Long-term Camping Experience" -- One week (that's six days and five nights, not five and five, or five and four) .

"High Adventure" -- trip generally refers to one of the five nationally accredited High Adventure bases. I.e., Phlimont, Sea Base, Northern Tier. Generally, one to two weeks.

"Super Trip" loosely refers to trips similar to high adventure trips. However, these trips range anywhere from a "50-miler" canoe trip down a nearby river to visiting a Troop in Poland.

A "position of responsibility." It's the real name for what most boys call "leadership jobs."

For a youth to reach the rank of Star, Life or Eagle Scout, they have to hold a POR. You can see these listed at http://www.meritbadge.com/adv/boyscout.htm. Notice that the lists for Star and Life are identical, but that Eagle is different.

There is a little more to this. BSA doesn't talk about "Class A" and "Class B," but most scouts and scouters do. In the BSA,

Field Uniform = "Class A"
Activity Uniform = "Class B" (although this does not require scout pants)

DD--District Director (fancy name for a DE)

DD could be considered as a fancy name for a DE, but a DD is one level higher than a DE (more seniority, better pay). He has all the responsibility as a DE but for bigger districts a DD could have one or more DEs under his supervision.

Add "partial". This is a slang term to indicate a document showing that a Scout has met some of the requirements for a Merit Badge but hasn't finished it yet.
