GeoCaching is fun. But it is not the only use for GPS devices. I like to have it on all of my backpacking trips. Not for the scouts to use, but to keep a record of the trails. Sometimes I find the trail maps are not too accurate.

But with the GPS, I can transfer the trips route to my computer and with free mapping software update the ToPo map with the actual trail route we took. The free software can also overlay the route on Satellite maps.
It is really fun to see where you actually went versus where you planned to go.
GPS devices never replace good ToPo maps or map skills. They are definitely a new tool and a great aid.
