Adults pay for very little in our troop. The troop covers the cost for BSA membership, food, outings, summer camp fees, entrance or activity fees, IRS mileage. The only money we've collected from adults lately is for High Adventure. For example, whitewater rafting costs $450 per person (North Idaho Adventure Base); the troop pays the amount of the adult summer camp fee (usually around $90) and the adult participant pays the rest. If we didn't have an adult willing to pay $360, we'd probably need to come up with a new policy.
We instituted this policy when we found there were fewer and fewer adults able to afford to participate. Each driver used to collect money from Scouts for gasoline, but those of us with a gas guzzling truck carrying gear didn't get as much money as those who carried 8 boys, so we switched to a "request the IRS mileage if you want" policy instead. In reality, no one asks for travel money every time, so it works out well.
