Venture Patrol - Is it required to bring Class 3 Med. forms?

As my Troop's ASM for Venture Patrol, I have a question about Med forms. Is it necessary for me to actually bring a hard copy of each Scout/Leader's Class 3 Med Form on each event/activity?

Or is it sufficent enough that I make sure that the troop has updated Class 3's on the Venture Patrol members?

I always took a hard copy on each activity. As a high school band director I had 165 to take on each performance away from the school so for me taking the 10 or 12 for a scout outing was nothing.

I always make sure I have a copy on hand for my scouts when we go on an outing away from our regular meeting place. If a Scout gets hurt, I have the info in hand for the Emergency Room or Medics if needed.

We keep a photo-copy of all Class 1, 2 or 3 med forms in our troops first aid kit. We also have a troop form detailing any particular information (such as allergies, medicines, etc) on all the scout's and leaders.

Some rules for venture patrol as the rest of the troop. (As well as venturing crews). On your outings you should have a copy of your med forms with you. The cross over from a class 1 & 2 to were a class 3 is required is a little vague to me (except for us over 40 old scouters). The way I read the G2SS, most weekend trips would not require a class 3.

What about Class 3's for the adults? Should I, the ASM in charge of the Venture Patrol carry a copy of the Class 3 Med Form on any Adults that are going?

If the adult fell & was unconscious what would do? If your plan is to cover then with leaves then you do not need forms. If your are planning on getting medical attention then the appropriate form should be with you.

Back to reality, As the group or outing leader, I ensure we have the physical forms for all participants attending the outing. For us, it is not much of a prolem as most if not all scouts attend summer camp, as well as the adults who do most of the outings. If we run into a situation where an adult does not have a current physical, we have them complete the form without the doctors examination. I see value in this, as there is a permission block they sign that authorizes medical treatment.

Actually the BSA rules are as follows:

1) Class 1/2 for youth low impact activity
2) Class 3 for adults over 40 and for youth where it is a high adventure activity
3) medicals, permission slips and permit to be taken on all activities (yest permits are optional in certain council-defined cases).

This weekend while at the District Camporee, I had a scout cut his finger that due to its location required a couple of stitches. I am the Scoutmaster, and when I took the scout to the hospital, things went very smooth with the hospital because I had the Scouts latest medical form (which saved him from having to get a tetenus shot, because his shot record was available to medical personnel), and signed permission slip from his parents.

Beteween the two documents, we had everything necessary that the hospital needed for treatment. His medical record, his personal doctor's information, insurance information, and parental signatures.

Yes we had contacted the parents when it happened to let them know what had happened and what was being done, as well as follow-up call to the parents after treatment to let them know the outcomes.

I beleive by having the right documentation, things went very smooth.
