Great Summer Camp with great, very rare award *MUST READ*

At our summer camp in Buckeye council at Seven Ranges Scout Reservation we have this program called pipestone. We have been doing this for over 80 years. Our council has a copyright on it so if you want to ever consider email me. Anyway, each summer camp you have to do certain tasks to earn your pipestone , after the 5th year, you're done. For your first year you need to,
1.earn at least one merit badge during your stay at camp
2.identify 15 plants,trees and shrubs
3.identify 4 constellations or 6 birds
4.identify 8 insects
5.do a good turn for camp (assigned project)
6. be a registered scout
7. get a 1'x1' bundle of barkless wood
YEAR2:
1. Do requirements 1,5, &7 from previous
2.identify 25 plants,trees, and shrubs
3.identify 10 mammals, reptiles, or amphibians
4.identify 6 constellations
5.be a second class ranked scout
YEAR 3:

1. Requirement 1 from previous
2. identify 35 plants, trees, and shrubs
3. identify 8 constellations
4.identify 10 birds
5. be a 1st class ranked scout

YEAR 4:
1. Requirement 1 from previous
2.complete another service project during camp
3. take a leadership position (helping younger scouts with merit badges,pipestone requirements)
4. write a report on requirement 3
5. be a Star ranked scout

YEAR 5:
1. do a service project with troop for camp (good turn)
2.complete at least one merit badge during your stay at camp
3.complete requirements 3 & 4 from previous
4. do a service project with other 5th years while your stay at camp
5. be a Life ranked scout

There are exceptions. If you are an adult as long as you help the scouts that week you'll be able to get a pipestone award.Also, if you are on camp staff you can earn the award as long as you stay out of trouble.



P.S: A pipestone is a rare piece of stone found north in one city in Minnesota.....as you earn the pipestone each year there is an additional symbol until you earn your 5th year http://www.goodturnprogram.org/_borders ... %20red.jpg this site has a somewhat cartoonish picture of the pipestone award but it will give you the general idea.

Finally came back with 2 merit badges (em. prep. and art), 4th year pipestone, and got tapped out for OA (Ordeal 2 days after I get back from Philmont).

Camp Yawgoog has something similar, but not so involved, it has CY Bronze, CY Gold, and CY Silver. The requirments are on yawgoog.org

Camp Indian Trails in the ool Sinnissippi Council had a similar program called the Blackhawk Honor. You earned medals each year with a different color ribbon each year. There was a set of 4 medals you could earn.

We just got back from 7Ranges (a couple of hours ago).

Only had 5 boys (2 - 2nd yr, 3 - 1st yr) as we've got 6 older Scouts heading to Philmont this week.

Each boy earned 3 merit badges with the 2nd yr Scouts completing Star.
This brand new Scoutmaster is very proud...

All five boys plus 4 adults earned the Pipestone Award.
(One of our leaders, a 79-yr old, earned his 4th yr Pipestone.)

Wow Billikin it's been so long since I posted this...I can't believe I might accually get to meet you this summer. At any rate next month I'll post my 3rd annual summer camp thread for all!

Crossroads of America Council has a program called Firecrafter and the Ozarks Trails Council has Tribe of Lone Bear program.

Both are Honor groups that builds on the foundation of Scouting and tries to help the older Scouts be even better Scouts by providing an additional opportunity for personal growth and service to Scouting.

Even though OA offers similar opportunities, it has been my experience that these Council/Camp programs help the older boys come back to camp and makes them even better leaders in their Troops.
