BALOO Question

Postby Lynda J » Thu Feb 15, 2007 12:45 pm

Had a unit contact me about Pack camping? They don't have anyone Baloo trained but have a parent that is has taken Boy Scout Outdoor leader skills. Could they use that person as their trained adult. I would really prefer that they get people Baloo trained but they are a new Pack.
And are really trying to give the boys a fun programl.

My understanding is that you have to be Baloo trained for cub scout camping. There are some differences between cub & boyscout camping.

For a special situation, if you had a leader that already had good outdoor skills & would think you could arrrange an one on one training that would cover it.

Just heard from our Council Training Chairman. It won't count. But if a pack is camping at a Council or District sponsored event they don't have to have anyone Baloo trained.

Although there are some things that are used in both , the 2 trainings cover two completely different topics, and more to the point, two completely different BSA programs. Cubs do NOT camp like Boy Scouts.

Also, if your council is like mine, they will check the BALOO listed leader on the Tour Permit for a valid BALOO training certificate. No BALOO certification, no Tour Permit.

BALOO

Another thing that may happen, does happen in my Council. When using the Council Camps for Cub overnighters, the BALOO cards WILL be looked at. Been there and did that.

Now, as one poster suggested, get the syllabus if possible, and have another Trainer do the required class...or better yet for scheduling purposes...borrow a trained BALOO person from another Unit. Many Units never get it that they can help and even participate with each other.

Now if we could just our Council to accept State Parks for overnighters, we would be in good shape!
