College of Commissioner Science

Postby mt_goodrich » Sun Jul 08, 2007 7:47 pm

I am interested in attending the College of Commissioner Science that the Longhorn Council will be sponsoring on August 4th.

I am just an Assistant Scoutmaster, but I figure ANY trainining I can get, why not take it. Requirements is that you must be a registered Scouter (which I am).

I just downloaded the schedule and course offerings and may ask for some suggestions on courses I should select.

And just realized that it is only three more months until my first Wood Badge weekend!

If the College of Commissioner Science there is the same as it is here, there will be a sequence of basic Commissioner course (usually all given each year) and supplemental/special courses taught as needed/available.

Generally, Commissioners would probably want to take the basic course as soon as possible (for ours the basic sequence covers all the same material as Commissioner Training). However, in your case, I would suggest that you take the ones that appeal to you the most.

Let us know how it turns out. I have found our "College" to be put on and attended by some of the most involved and dedicated Scouters I have met. And it is always good to meet and interact with others that you otherwise would not.

Likewise, I will be interested to hear about your Wood Badge experience, but I have every confidence that it will be a GREAT couple of weekends for you as it was for me.

Commish

The Beaver gives a great answer here. If you haven't received any commish training yet, then you should do the basic course I think. Our "U" in January allows one to expand on their training knowledge.

In reading the material, I can only pursue a Certificate of Continuing Education (which is okay by me). Only those serving in Commissioner positions are allowed to pursue the actual "degree".

Right now, here are my selections (seven courses)

(BCS 101) Intro to Commissioner Science

(BCS 103 The Commissioner and the District

(BCS 108) Effective Roundtables I

(BCS 109) Effective Roundtables II

(BCS 105) Practical Solutions to Common Unit Needs

(CEB 130) Boy Scout Roundtable

(BCS 114) Good Volunteer-Professional Relationships

I really have two goals by attending this training. First, you can never get enough training: Second, it will give me an opportunity to network and meet more folks. Although I am an Asst. Scoutmaster at the present time, I'd like to see about volunteering in other areas, as needed.

Hey...and it only costs $15.00 and they feed you lunch!

Degrees

Postby riverwalk » Wed Jul 11, 2007 12:29 am

Well, don't ever get hung up on the Degrees. In my efforts to keep up with all Scouting trainings, I've completed a couple of those Degrees. And I've yet to serve as a Commissioner anywhere, haha. But I function like one at any opportunity, as anyone should.

Your options listed will be good sessions to have under your belt, whether you do the other track or not. Can't go wrong gathering more training. My position in Emergency Services required that I recently do specific on line courses. Hmmm, I'm doing too much screen time anyway...so I am doing extra ones. I plan to qualify them for college hours.

Hey, for 15.00 AND lunch, that's a superduper Scout day if I ever saw one!

I'll be there as well (and no, I'm not a commissioner either. I'm a part time DE.) If it's half as much fun/useful as The Univ of Scouting held in Dec on SMU's campus, it'll be great! Hopefully, I'll get to the museum while I'm there.

I wanted to get a pair of Scout pants and got a pair last week off of ebay. It was only $18.00, which included shipping. Almost brand new.

Now I will be looking sharp when I go.

I also figured I needed them, plus an additional for Woodbadge in October. I also got a long sleeve Scout shirt for $11.00 off of ebay last week. Almost brand new too.

Update:

Postby mt_goodrich » Sun Aug 05, 2007 8:41 am

Yesterday I attending the CCS being offered by the Longhorn District at TCU in Fort Worth.

What an experience. I met so many folks and my eyes were opened to another part of Scouting I knew very little about: Commissioners.

I was definately in the minority because I was one of only three folks that weren't a Commissioner of any type. Majority were Unit Commissioners.

I really learned a lot and know that this is an area of big interests for me to volunteer.

Well, I was 2 of three then! (I was also the only out of stater there.) I'd second the superb quality of the training. I went to Univ of Scouting at SMU hosted by Circle 10 this past Dec and loved it as well. The Dallas/Ft Worth councils are really amazing in what they can do.

None other. I must have had that "touristy" look. (I actually did do the tourist thing. I drove over the day before and went to the BSA museum and REI. The Museum is pretty cool-and a major temptation to your wallet!) Were you the patch collector?

Commish

Postby riverwalk » Mon Aug 06, 2007 11:44 pm

I'll use the word commissioner somewhere in here, for Topic's sake.

Did anyone tell you about the OTHER Scouting museum in the area (that you visited)? Holler privately if you "need" to know. :)

It's a small world! One of my coworkers had her two grandchildren from Dallas visit today. They're both Cubs and while talking to their dad, I mentioned visiting the BSA museum Friday. He told me that Circle 10 has one as well at their Council building.

The kids got a kick out of being greeted with the Scout sign by someone they didn't know. They made my day!

Museums

Commissioner. Had to say that once. Yeah, the "other" one is at a local Council Camp. But as a NSM promoter, I want all to know they can pick up literature at the National one (NSM) on that other local one.

Yes one of the neat things at the National is the docents. They range from Scouters of long background, and former employees as well. They know I want to be one also, haha.
