Attending Trainer Development Course This Saturday

Postby mt_goodrich » Thu Feb 28, 2008 7:30 pm

Not sure about other councils, but in the Longhorn Council, in order to be considered for Wood Badge staff, it is required that you attend the Trainer Development Course (TDC). It is also recommended that if you participate as an instructor with any training staff that you attend.

This Saturday, March 1st from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, the TDC will be held at the Longhorn Council offices in Hurst, Texas.

I am part of the district training staff and hope to one day be on Wood Badge staff (shooting for 2009).

I was a trainer at our TDC a couple of weeks ago. We had a small turn out, but it was not too bad. Somehow, I ended up being in charge of the next TDC. Lucky me!

Looks like there will be a large turnout. The person in charge of it stated that there are 20 folks already signed up and have paid. And, then he has about 20 others that will come and pay at the door. The money is for lunch and snacks.

I just took my TDC! It was a loooooooooooooooong course, but I am glad I took it. I have about 7 pages of notes that I took, which surprised me!

TDC

There's also a position in Scouting that requires attendance to a TDC, but for Wood Badge, does it have to be in the same year that you'll staff the WB? I've wondered about staffing a future WB, but now understand one has to attend the new WB prior to staffing same. Good luck with your TDC.

Completed TDC on Saturday and it was a long day. However, I did learn a lot.

I had two folks at my table who were "old" Wood Badgers who will be taking the new course this Summer. They already had committed to not wearing their beads until the complete the course. Also, we had one person, during lunch, have their bead presentation. She had attended the old course in 1997 and attended the new one last year.

During one of our long breaks, had a conversation with someone from my district, who was a past Wood Badge course director (this past summer). Asked if I was planning on being a staffer in the future, and I told him "you bet". He said my name had come up as potential future staffer and I should expect a call for one of the 2009 courses. That got me really excited.

Funny thing is, I am an introvert. Before Wood Badge, I would never have thought to try and be on Wood Badge staff. The idea of getting up in front of people scared the heck out of me. Now, I seek out those opportunities. In the five months since I finished the training part of Wood Badge, I have made over ten Scouting related presentations to various groups and have enjoyed it. These have been Friends of Scouting, an ADHD presentation to two different districts at their round tables (and I will be doing another tomorrow night).

Riverwalk,

Yes the general rule for staffing Wood Badge is to have taken the current course. There are some exeptions for older course partcipants who have already staffed on the new course.

TDC staffing or participant is required for Wood Badge staff within three years of their WB staffing (could be two years - sorry recalling from memory)

Go for staffing TDC or Wood Badge. You will enjoy either or both

Understood. Yeah, I've staffed nearly everything else, haha. Hopefully I can get into the new WB someday, so I can then staff one. TDC's are easier, and those are attended every few years too.
