Mandatory Training

I'm not sure 'Mandatory Training' is the answer. Well, I think some is needed, but some of the suggestions made really make me think that the program would lose too many good leaders.

I'm going into a career where to be employed, I will have to be certified (psycho ) and in order to remain certified I will have to be continually learning.

I don't think it should be something like that to be a VOLUNTEER. I believe some basic training (YPT, Scout basics) is needed, but requiring Water this, Water that, Climbing, WoodBadge, etc? Sure there'll be good "trained" leaders, but those leaders better have a lot of free time because they'll be busy if a unit is going to have an active program. There won't be many who actually complete the training.

How about just madatory following the rules?

I see more "trained" leaders breaking the rules, than the new ones who just don't know better.

Seems that you could give a three strikes rule or something. Then those that want to stay will seek more training.

I wholeheartedly agree that basic training (i.e. YP, NLE, and leader specific) should be mandatory. I disagree with Woodbadge being mandatory, though. Time, money and children at home have kept me from being able to take Woodbadge, even though I really would LOVE to.

We have an issue in our Troop with Leaders not taking training, and after reading these posts I need to check into what our Council mandates. Maybe we can require these leaders to take the training or relinquish their positions.

Aside from YPT, the only "we" that can require the CC to do anything is the Charter Org. So the real question is how is your relationship with the Charter Org?

Actually, we have a new Charter Org, and before today I would have said I don't know. But I posted a problem on another thread last week about rushing advancement and some other problems, and after reading those replies I addressed the situation head on, including the Charter Org. Within hours, he had requested a meeting of several of us to address the issues.

He was VERY involved in the meeting this morning, and pushed for answers to our problems. And also was very interested in what he could do to help facilitate the changes.

So, to answer your question, we apparently have a GREAT relationship with our new Charter Org. And he was quite displeased that leaders did not have training.

I keep on reading the comment "what our council requires" in some of the prior postings -- training requirements come from National BSA NOT the Council. When the Council posts something on their web page or their newsletter regarding a training requirement, that is a training requirement that comes from the National Council of BSA, not your local council.

I don't know if I am in the "What our council requires" category or not, but I can tell you the council I serve, Minsi Trails Council, Allentown, PA, the Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, Venturing Crew Advisor and associaetd Committee Chair has to be trained to be recharteres, its not nationals rule, its one imposed by the Councils Executive Committee. There are other training requiremnts as well. Councils do get to make some rules, they can't make them less than National, but they can make then stricter, or so I have been told.

Likewise here in Buckskin Council. The top leader in each unit is required to be fully trained for the position in order to recharter. Starting this year the CC as well.

I have talked to Scouters from other councils and they tell me that is not a requirement. I can only conclude that councils can make more stringent requirements than national.

Given that the most successful units are those who have trained leaders, I can support the idea.
