Courses to recommend for a one day council event

Postby Fibonacci » Thu Oct 16, 2008 1:15 pm

Chief Seattle Council is holding their annual Program & Training Conference in a few days (Oct 18, 2008.) http://www.seattlebsa.org/images/08PTCBrochure.pdf The one day event offers four 1 1/2 hour sessions for all the levels of Scouting. Courses include Pack Events, Get With High Adventure, How to Form a Crew, & Commissioners Training. Regular "classes" are also included like Den Leader Training & SMASM. For the most part, the classes are informative and well worth the time.

Here is my issue: almost all of the courses are repeats from previous years. I know that there are great ideas for 1 1/2 hour classes, and I hope that folks on this forum can give me great suggestions that I can pass along to the director.

My ideas
Idea #1: Working with Scouts who have ADHD We had an excellent Roundtable session on this topic several years ago. I think almost every troop has at least one Scout with ADHD, and most of us would like some ideas of how to work effectively with these guys.
Idea #2: Working with Scouts who have Aspergers Syndrome
Idea #3: Networking
Idea #4: Merit Badge Counselor Training & Networking

Thank you, in advance, for sharing your ideas & experiences. I know there is a lot of wonderful training going on out there.

Internet Advancement

Hazardous Weather - required for Tour permits in 2009
Safe Swim/Safety Afloat also as required on TP
These 3 of course can be done on line

Pick any number of items out of the Troop Bylaws Section Posts

How about a training session on Troop By-laws??? Everyone bring theirs and see what you get! Would be longer than 1 1/2 hours though. :(

A tax professional could speak on what is and is not deductable (re our involvement in Scouting).
Also discuss what records need to be kept to justify the tax deduction (if you were to get audited).

I've deducted uniform costs, fees, and this year, over 2700 miles (at $0.14/mile).

Also, apparantly there are new IRS reporting regs applicable to 503(c) organizations (like most of our COs).
