BSA training validation

Postby Fred Johnson » Tue Jul 13, 2010 5:58 pm

BSA added a new "Training Validation" on the myscouting.org web site. I've been hoping to get something like this for years. Our council person is over worked and I hate bugging her to get detailed reports of who is trained in what. Now instead of blind begging and badgering, I can get some real information.

It is flaky though. Depending on browser, you might have trouble launching it. (Firefox - Object reference not set to an instance of an object.-DecodedQS=... Grrrr....) If so, sign in to MyScouting and then manually go to the link. https://scoutnet.scouting.org/trainingvalidation

Another flaky. Try sorting on training date. January is listed 1st. Then Feb. then March. Of couse the years are intermixed. Not a big deal, but who tests these things anyway.

The biggest flakiness is the search. Always use the BSA ID when possible. A good example is one of our members ... if I search by his BSA ID #, I get three records. If I search by his last name and state, I get one record. It should either find ALL four entries OR report that the search by last name and state yields more than one person. With other people where the last name overlaps with other people, I get a message that more than one person found and it won't show any of the records until I get more specific. It is either not recognizing it is two people (one with BSA # and one without) or it recognizes it is the same person but shows only part of the data. Either way, bad result. :(

Even with the flakiness, this tool is absolutely great. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

PS - Wish it would show 50 or 100 training records or more per page instead of the ten. Some of our members have lots of training. Gets old going to each page

I agree that this is a great tool. ....... Well, lets say a start of a great tool.

I agree the search is flaky. Even taking exact name and city/state from the charter document it doesn't seem to find everyone. I can live with the sorting issues, but also think 10 per page is a bad choice.

Not sure that this is going to help the Council training folks (at least in the short term). Because there are a lot of things missing for the folks I checked. Looks like it may generate more work as people say "... what about my.....".

In any case, it is important to get the records straightened out. Especially as we move toward 2012 when National is supposed to start enforcing mandatory training for leaders to re-register at charter time. My guess is that this will represent the data that they will use to determine trained status. So we better work on getting it right.

I was able to probe the records of all our CMs in less than 10 minutes.
