Linking a MyScouting.org Account to ScoutNet

Postby agdparker » Tue Oct 11, 2011 1:09 pm

Our council is requiring YPT for all leaders that are chartered this year for the first time. As such, we've been trying to clean up our training records and updating our leaders' training online. One of the common questions I receive during this process is linking up their MyScouting.org account to ScoutNet so the Scout office can see the training they've done online.

I put together a few screenshots in a document to help them with this and I thought it might be useful for others. I tried to attach my PDF, but it wouldn't let me. How can I share this on this board?

I thought all you had to do was to enter your BSA membership number as part of your profile. That's all I did. Now my scouting.org training summary shows classes I've taken that had been recorded at my local council, and the troop training chair can check everyone's status.

E-mail it to me; I'll take a look at it and see what I can do.

When I first registered my scout account, I didn't have my membership number handy. I took YPT and printed the certificate for our recharter. The next time I went into my scout account, I entered my membership number. When I accessed my training history, all the completed courses showed up.

That is all you have to do, but my leaders were struggling to understand that process. For the less technically savvy, it can be confusing. :)

That's the same process that I did, but some of my leaders were struggling with it, so I whipped up a quick document to help.

Wow, kind of scary that in this day and age we have folks who can't figure out what an "Update My Profile" button is for.

They should have asked their Scouts. I bet even the youngest Tiger would have been able to help, or even to do it for them!

They are fantastic leaders and I'm grateful to have them, but technology is not their strong point, at least some of them. Each person brings something different to the table, so together we're running a decent program (looking like Gold-level JtE, woot woot!)

Our troop still hasn't updated BeAScout.org. The only ones who can do it are the CC and the SM. Neither could understand the directions I sent.

I think this is just exactly why BSA added Webmaster to the list of PORs for the Scouts!

It will not be all that long before the paper and pencil will be enshrined in museums for antiques.

Fortunately as Cubmaster, I get to set that up the BeAScout for our Pack. I've talked to 2 different interested parents over the last 2 months, although since we don't do Tigers we weren't able to bring them in. Still, I think it's a great opportunity, but it's got to be set up. Too bad you can get their MyScouting.org login information!

Meet them somewhere with wifi and take your laptop or other internet device.

bring up myscouting.org

have them log into their account

show them how to enter their BSA id number

make sure to bring a copy of the roster that shows the id numbers for your unit in case they don't really know their number.

save profile

click on training validation and type in their number and see if it shows.
advise them that it may not update and show immediately (seems to be some lag time).

repeat for all leaders who can't figure out how to update their profiles.

have the email address to contact BSA for those whose training is stuck,
as well as who at your council that is manually entering training dates.

Rather than trying to coordinate schedules and locations with each person, a simple document seems like a much easier method whereby they can do it themselves on their own schedule.
