More classes different time frame (IOLS)

Postby bidartia » Thu May 14, 2015 12:21 pm

My son just bridged up in February of this year. I decided again to be an assistant leader.

Since i have already done and updated the required Y.P.T. and other online training, in order to be an effective assistant leader i need to get my IOLS - Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (S11).

I'm really am disappointed that the opportunities to take this course only happens at the first part of the new year and not at any other time it seems like. My council(Greater Yosemite) did the course before I became an assistant scout master (paperwork). I was willing to go to another council within a reasonable driving distance of my home (100 miles) Pretty much, either the course was already completed or I had just missed the date by 2 days. In a nut shell, IOLS courses are done pretty much at the same time.

Me not being a certified/trained leader hit home last night. Our camp out this weekend got cancelled because there wasn't a "trained" leader able to go.

I wish this course was offered at least a couple times a year.

Most of the districts in my area offer IOLS in late March to April. All but a pack or two in my district cross over in February, so the only problem is finding an opening in a course.

Does your council's training chair know about your desire for training? Sometimes if enough people want a class they will schedule it.

I was able to find a course that was out of council. Doing the course at the end of May.

Funny how I sort of got the message that within our council, the person who is in charge of organizing the training tends to drop the ball.

That's too bad. In my district the Training Chair does an excellent job.

Glad to hear it worked out for you.

Take a look at what your troop's summer camp offers for leader training. It might be available there.
