Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is a one-day training event that introduces leaders and parents to the skills needed to plan and conduct pack outdoor activities, particularly pack camping.

Participants who complete this training course will

Understand the focus of the Cub Scout level of the BSA outdoor program.
Gain the skills needed to plan and carry out a successful Cub Scout-level overnight activity.
Learn more about the resources available from the BSA for carrying out this activity.
This training is required for any adult who is in charge of planning a pack campout.

Not to continue far down the BALOO trail in a Wood Badge thread, but it all relates well.

Any Scouter wanting to do their best, would likely accept required trainings to stay in compliance. And by attending trainings, the Unit benefits. And by veteran members attending, a clear example is made for the newer people. Nothing wrong with going to BALOO, even if skilled in the outdoors. The better point is this. Anyone just having one trained person in the Unit misses the BSA point. They want at least one BALOO person on the actual overnighter. So you should get a number of BALOO folks ready, or you'll have to cancel some outings if the one isn't available. And better still, any member with background to draw from, should be asking to help the Training team.

Too many Scouters with tenure, are the campfire types in the room, IMHO. They may be at official trainings, but stand at the back of the room, or go in and out, or chat with their "buds" instead of being a resource in the room. :wink:
