On BALOO Staff and Need Help

Postby mt_goodrich » Sat Jan 12, 2008 1:20 pm

I have been assigned the Round Robin Topic: Stoves, Lanterns and Fire Safety.

I've got most of my material and equipment together, however, there is one item I just realized I didn't have and can't seem to find it via Google.

With regard to lighting charcoal it states: Use of a charcoal starter such as the BSA No. 01170, which will light a load of charcoal quickly with a single sheet of paper, is recommended over commercial lighter fluids for overall safety and ease of use.

I am thinking that the BSA No. 01170 is a metal cannister in which a piece of paper is placed at the bottom and charcoal is stacked on top. I have a commercial one of these and I have used No. 10 Cans with the appropriate holes at the bottom to do this.

Am I correct?

Didn't know there was a BSA charcoal chimney, but I use a commercial one. Works great. I would contend that 2 sheet of paper works better. I have used lighter fluid at home in the past, but these chimneys work better and faster and use no fluid. They are the way to go.

You can make one, but probably the commercial ones are better. It is important to get a good air flow and having a handle is just easier.

Yep, they are talking about a charcoal chimney.

I would stick with a commercial one. For the most part, these folks are not going to want to create their own chimney. Commercial ones are cheap and easy to find, if they do not already have one.

Also, as a BALOO Course Director, let me add a big THANK YOU for volunteering to be on BALOO staff!

Willing staffers can be hard to come by at times.

Thanks for all the responses!

And we are correct, it is a charcoal chimney.

I do have a "handmade" one, but also have the commercial one too.

I am excited about BALOO training...I am doing all I can to give back to Scouting.

BALOO training was great this weekend! We were able to training 20 new leaders and had a great time.

As always, I learned a few new things.

Next up, Outdoor Leader Skills (OLS) and Outdoor Webelos Leader Skills (OWLS), which I will be staffing in April. I will be responsible for the Cooking classes for both courses.

Oh...and serving on staff for BALOO and NLE/Leader Specific two weeks ago helped satisfy a Ticket Item for Wood Badge.

Kudos on working that Ticket. I'm sure the attendees had (and will have) great experiences. Giving back to Scouting through instructing is more than service. It helps those that follow us, and that gives life to the program.
