Wood Badge ticket

Postby PGH » Sat Jul 12, 2008 10:24 am

What is the process for determining WB ticket items? Does the individual work with the Committee and/or SM to select projects? Is it something the individual does as part of the WB training and "surprises" the Troop with?

Wood Badge tickets are developed by the individual in consultation with the Wood Badge staff. There is information provided during the course on how to write the ticket, but not specifically what it should include. The ticket is a plan for the individual Wood Badge participant to provide service to Scouting.

There is nothing that either requires or prohibits the individual from consulting with his home unit, district, or council.

P.S. - The course is an EXCELLENT leadership course. It provides skills and insights that go well beyond your involvement in Scouting. I strongly urge you (or anyone interested in these skills - and helping the Scouting program) to find a way to attend. If anyone has questions about the training your Council should have someone who can answer or contact someone here and we will try to answer or direct you to the correct resources.

If you have ticket items that you would like to pursue that involves your unit, it is probably a good idea to discuss these with the unit leadership. Not required....but to be safe, I would consult with them.

I had a patrol member come up with a good ticket item; however, it was not something that the pack committee wished to pursue at the time and there developed some problems between him and the unit.

Also, if you attend a 2 weekend Wood Badge course, you will probably draft your ticket the first weekend and have the intervening week or two to discuss it with your unit or other interested parties before you finalize it and get it approved the second weekend. The 2 weekend courses are currently much more frequently scheduled than the week long course.

The ticket is written during the WB course. You will get help from your troop guide & others as required. The actual ticket items are the end of the process that starts with a vision. Bringing the action items to the beginning of the course is almost a guarantee of trouble writing the ticket since the WB staff will want you to go through the process of developing your vision first. Better to think about what you would like to improve about scouting that is specific to your position. Definitely talk to the CC, SM & others about about your vision since you need their help to work off your ticket.
