Refresher Training

Postby biglou » Wed Feb 11, 2009 6:48 pm

Does the BSA have any sort of refresher training available? I know from doing training from the Fire/EMS Service that we have annual training we have to do. Could there be something online made available to make sure everyone is on the same page? Just a thought.

I do help with training and have completed Wood Badge. Roundtables would be nice except that Bucktail only concentrates on the Cub Scout Program. They completely neglect the Boy Scout/Venturing Programs. I was just wondering outloud.

There should be a separate Roundtable for each program - and a separate RT Commissioner.

For ours we meet at the same place and time so we can combine the Boy Scout and Cub Scout groups for common information at the beginning then come back together for refreshments at the end. But out of the 1.5 hour meeting, we are only together for about 30 minutes.

I agree with you about the seperate Roundtable for each program. Just try to convince the "powers that be" to do their jobs.

It up to the leaders of the district/council I understand they are one in the same now to convince the council exec/commissioner you have a need and a want for Scout Rountables and Venturing Forums
Your council has some problems that are probably not going to go away soon.

Yeah, I know. The problem starts at the very top. I am not going to hide my feelings. I got enough problems as it is. I would attend Roundtable as would other leaders. But, the current "lack of leadership" is a huge problem. I could go on and on.

Hate to be the bad person on this one BUT. If the training is that bad why dont you and some friends step in and take over the roundtable meetings? I did for three years and it was one of the most rewarding things I have done in scouting. We learned as we went. If you do step in and do it then just remember to keep it fun to all.

I have got my plate full with being a Scoutmaster and Crew Advisor. I also help out with training. I am only 34 and do not want to get burnt out! I already did that once and it wasn't pretty!

If you want refresher training, you can always take the training again. You can offer to be a trainer. You can also read the various adult and scout books & pamphlets.

When I see a post on this forum I frequently go back to the SM Handook, Scout Handbook, MB Pamphlet to get the answer.

I believe I am still a trainer for the Council and I have read different books that the BSA has printed from over the years. However, I was just freelance thinking about refresher training at work. You have to complete the YPT every two years. I was just curious as to why there is not something like an online Refresher Training for the BSA. I have stated that my council has not had Roundtable Training for the Boy Scout/Venturing programs in quite some time for the Boy Scout program and never for Venturing.
