Wood Badge for Committee Chair

Postby rkpeck » Thu Jul 09, 2009 3:18 pm

I've agreed to transition in to the Committee Chair for our troop over the next several months. I've taken a bit of training (NLE, Outdoor Leader Skills, Troop Comm. Challenge, Scoutmaster Fundementals). I was previously Pack Committee Chair for 2-3 years.

I'm wondering if I'd really benefit from Wood Badge for the position of Committee Chair. Most of what I read about Wood Badge training appears to be related to interaction with the scouts rather than interaction with the Troop Committee.

It's been suggested that if I wanted additional training in this area, there are focused courses available at the Philmont Training Center (which sound somewhat more helpful than Wood Badge)

Any thoughts would be beneficial.

Wood Badge would be useful as committee chair. Looks like you already taken a lot of the basic training. Wood badge is a lot about developing a vision which is certainly something a CC should have. You could even have going to Philmont to take more training as a ticket item. :)

Sir...you couldn't be further from the truth thinking that Wood Badge only for interacting with Scouts.

Wood Badge is about interacting with others, no matter the group. To be honest, I've used what I've learned in Wood Badge more at work than in Scouting.

I would strongly recommend you going.

Appreciate the replies. I will try to extract myself from other (scouting) commitments in order to attend this fall.

I persoanaly think Woodbadge is for every scouter out there reguardless of what postion you hold in scouting. I had a District Chaplian in my patrol.

If you have any questions, just ask.

I'm staffing a course in two weeks, a week long course. I'll be a Troop Guide.

I had two Cub Scout Den Leaders in my WB BEAR Patrol.
Both had been in Scouting just under two years.

If ever offered the opportunity to take Wood Badge, please take the invitation as a truly sincere compliment and give it your utmost personal consideration. If at all possible, take it... and simply do the best you can.

The course, in and of itself, is not what's important. Like other personal development courses (per se), the act of taking the Wood Badge course (and, dare I say, working your ticket) will benefit you, personally and, in turn, those with whom you interact... both, in and out of Scouting. And, long after you've finished your ticket, the effects of having taken Wood Badge will, of course, continue to benefit you and others.
