"Required Training" in 2010, 2011, 2012....

Postby wagionvigil » Fri Jan 01, 2010 10:03 am

2010 will be a year of change for the BSA. They will start the process of required training. 2010 will be for all of those that have direct contact with the youth. Next year it will be for all. If you do not have the required training for what you are doing by the end of 2010 and are in that first group you will be dropped from the BSA. Any leader responsible for say a weekend campout must have the full SM training done. ALso in the works is a new Powder Horn Course of 2011. It will include youth for the first time in advanced training. It also will not be geared as much toward Ventruring but to a quality consultant driven outdoor program. Greater Pittsburgh Council is scheduling a PH Course for 2011. They have their Course Director but dates have not been set yet.

about time for the training.

I think adding youth to the PH course is good.

The only thing that scares me about this is how clueless our council training committee is.

Per BSA Training Updates on the National Web site, 2010 is for the 20 PILOT councils (not all councils) to have all TOP LEADERS (not direct contact) trained.

The mandatory training schedule looks like this -

2010 -
20 Pilot Councils - All top leaders
All Other Councils - None

2011 -
20 Pilot Councils - All direct contact leaders
All Other Councils - All top leaders

2012 -
20 Pilot Councils - All leaders trained
All Other Councils - All direct contact leaders

Been trying. Made sure our troop's house was in order first. Sash training had to be done. Plus we are a Catholic Sponsored troop so there is additional YPT training required.

Our CTC needs an overhaul and the new professional they have in charge is working on it. The volunteers don't seem to have any sense of urgency. Unfortunately it's going to take some unit to get their activity cancelled due to lack of training to get some fired up.

We are also experiencing a potential merger with another council so there is a lot of jockeying for positions.

I suppose the benefits of having all trained leaders outweighs the potential loss of untrained ones. But then, if they are not dedicated enough to the scouting program to take the proper training, how good of leader could they possibly be.

York-Adams. Savings would mostly be in Labor costs. Juanita's Units voted no after their Exec Bd said okay. KAC units and EB said yes.

Heard a lot of this was driven by National and that there are way too many councils in PA and NY. We have 7 different councils that are within the Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg.

Depends upon what LEVEL of training we're talking about. There's no excuse for not having the basic (online) training, but I can see where it might be a problem for some at the lower levels if they have to have all the training.

Now the big question. Which councils are required for this year? And why just do a few why not make the move completly now?

many are Metro Councils. But also many other councils are Jumping on the wagon and requiring it this year. Many people do npt erlize that local councils can have some rules of their own when it come to training and safety. They can never have less than what is required by National BSA but they can have more. I know a council that requires a Risk Management training for anyone takeing a unit ANYWHERE that a tour permit would be required and you would not believe how many unit leaders try to get around that requirement.

Phase it in gradually and have a plan for it. Let everyone know that this is coming and I think it will make the transition for everyone gettting trained than just throwing it in there now. I have seen organizations that made dynamic changes without plans and that just completely failed.

I forgot to mention that Del-Mar-Va Council has required training for 3 years now.

Our Council is one of the Councils in the pilot program. So far the biggest issue is getting the records straight. Many emails, surveys, scoutnet cross checks. It's been ongoing for 6 months now and just wrapping up. Now our top leaders (SM/CM)have to be trained this year. I'd personally like to see the CC's be included but they're not at this point.
