On-line training

Postby teepeeayy » Thu Nov 04, 2004 11:09 am

There's an announcement stickey here that says training on line is available. My council only has Youth Protection. Can someone provide a link somewhere else? As a newly-volunteered Asst. SM, I'd like to start the training process.

I have a problem with to much training on-line. I think that renewing YPT on line is fine but feel that the first time you take it you should be in a class room setting with other parents. There needs to be open discussion.
At one of my trainings one mother thought that only low income families had problems with child abuse. By the time the class was over she came to me and was in tears. Said she had never realized that it was so wide spread.

I also feel that so much of the other training we need to take is better taken in a group setting. One of the things I love about training is the exchange of ideas. I always call then brain swaps sessions. When you take training on-line you simply don't get that.

I understand that we all have very busy schedules. And on-line training can make it easier to get more people trained. But you lose more that what in my opinion you gain.

Now I will get off my training soap box.

Hi Lynda, don't ever come off your soapbox! The moment you do, you allow yourself to settle for things.

I've sat through several YPT classes, as well as Cub-specific training classes ass a former cubmaster. I agree the first time you see it should be in a round table environment because of the interaction among participants, but I'm at the point where some on-line training, perhaps ahead of class training, would be beneficial. I'm already scheduled for Safe Environment (Catholic youth participant requirement).

Don't worry Terry. It is a well used hand-me-down soap box. My mom and dad used it so did my Gran. Taught my kids to use it. So not much chance of me getting off it to often.

Currently there are 4 trainings offered on line by the BSA.

Youth Protection must be taken through the link at your local council only, you should not take YP training from another councils link.

Each Council must customize the YP on-line presentation to be representative of its own local laws and contact information. Plus, at the completion of the course, a record is sent by e-mail to your local council office for your training records. Taking YP from another council will not give you the information you need or record your training.

The other three available courses are the Fast Start courses for the three program levels. You can link to them at the BSA's national website at:
