Suicide Recognition and Prevention

Postby biglou » Fri Nov 18, 2011 10:02 pm

Does the BSA have any training for adult leaders about this subject? I asked my brother (the BSA Professional) and his response was "Probably somewhere. Deep within the archives of the Death Star". If not, this might be a good idea. I know my Troop is not the only Troop that has ever dealt losing a Scout/Scouter, but if we can save some of our Scouts/Scouters it is training well worth it.

Just my two cents .

While the BSA does not seem to have such there are a number of programs available that offer some of the things to watch out for, and yes they are oriented towards youth victims rather than adults. Even then it can be a crap shoot. And no, yours is not the only troop ever thus affected.

BSA does not have any suicide training. You might ask at your local hospital for resources.

Dude, you might want to rewrite what you posted. I have to admit that I did get a good laugh out of it.

I talked with my big brother who happens to be a "BSA Professional" and I posted what he had said.

I am still laughing about the suicide training. I am sorry. It has been a rough few days for me.

It seems there may be "something" available if the document found on this link is any indication.

http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/46-506.pdf

It references a video that may be available through National, if I am reading it correctly.

And Scouting magazine ran an article on the subject back in 2002. Link here:

I think that is in the Venturing Youth Protection Video. I will check that out later this afternoon. Thanks so much for posting this.
